I notice that the commentators in his match clips call Nguyen “Nyoo- un.”

Years ago in Sydney I was responsible for organising translators for CentreLink phone calls to non-English-speaking clients. Vietnamese were prominent among them, and one of the commonest surnames - the Vietnamese version of Smith or Williams - was Nguyen.

The Vietnamese translators taught me to pronounce it like “win”, but with an “ng” in front of it. “Ngwin.” (Of course that might be a Vietnam regional pronunciation.)

A friend pronounces her name similarly but more ng-wen.
But I have also heard others I don’t know well pronounced as noo-un, so have always been unsure about that.

I once asked a guy I worked with how to pronounce his surname property and at first he said not to worry about it, because I wouldn’t be able to say it. Then he relented and said Ng-win as above.

For sure the commentators will say Noo-yen, I reckon.

For a Cat B Rookie spot, he looks decent. Pleasing is how well he’s done at every level he’s progressed to, including a good first up showing in the VFL. Hope we can finally get something out of our NGA and Cat B rookies because it’s been slim picking in that regard. With Kako and Nguyen maybe things will start to turn!

That’s farked. Seeing a kid of Vietnamese heritage playing should be absolutely celebrated. We have such a strong history of Vietnamese legends in Australia and even as an Italian I’d say their food pretty much smashes everything else on earth! It’s so good
