#45 Alec Waterman - thighning off

He’s got a bit of the Shannon Hurns about him. Nuggety and fantastic kick of the footy.

Interesting perspective from a random on the Eagles Bigfooty board, found after wading through post after post complaining about VIC BIAS.

So what’s his tank like? I assume being knocked about for a couple of years with glandular fever would’ve had an impact.

Looked great in a half of footy but can he run out a whole game at the top level?

his brother is rubbish, imo

Thigh,Thigh,Thigh.

Delilah.

Nope, he has got 2 good knees.

Only time will tell. Seems a perfect replacement for an injured Stringer as a forward who can run through the middle.

Reported in The West that we have offered a contract.

Ex-Eagle flies out for AFL lifeline

Alec Waterman has flown out of Perth, determined to make the most of his second AFL chance.

Comeback complete.

Former Eagle Alec Waterman has reportedly been elevated to Essendon’s senior list following his stunning four-goal performance in last week’s scratch match.

The Bombers have moved quickly to secure Waterman’s services after his mum revealed he’d attracted interest from rival AFL clubs.

“He (Alec’s manager) had a few calls from other clubs wanting to know where Alec was at,” Peta Waterman told 6PR yesterday.

“If it doesn’t happen with Essendon, it may happen with someone else.”

The son of dual West Coast premiership star Chris was taken by the Eagles with pick 76 in the 2014 draft, but was struck down by glandular fever and couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a break-out year in the WAFL in 2020, helping the Tigers to the grand final with 26 goals in just 10 games.

Unsurprisingly, his dominant form saw him named Claremont’s fairest and best for the season - and now, it’s handed him a well deserved AFL lifeline.

Waterman flew out to Tullamarine in late January in a bid to earn another crack at the top level.

“It would be awesome to see whether I am good enough to play,” Waterman said on departure.

“(When you’re young) you think that footy’s everything and the highs and the lows determine how you feel in your everyday life… it’s a pretty ordinary thing actually.”

Waterman’s mum pointed out how significant the achievement is after the serious health battle.

“I don’t think he can do much more. From where he’s come from and what we’ve seen in the last five years, to a point where he couldn’t even leave the house for a few years and get excited if he could do 10 push-ups on his knees,” she said.

“Alec is just a great kid. He’d be happy to be back here, playing with his mates at Claremont and hopefully winning a premiership.

“If he gets this opportunity in the AFL, he’ll take it of course. We’re just all so proud of him for where he’s got to. He played well on Thursday.”

Following the news of Waterman’s contract, praise flew in thick and fast.

“More impressive than Alec Waterman’s footy, is his resilience. Never gave up and now gets a second chance at @essendonfc. Football always provides such great stories,” 7NEWS reporter Ryan Daniels said.

“Very happy to hear Alec Waterman has been offered a contract by Essendon. First class fella who deserves another chance. Would like to see him playing for a WA team but sometimes you have to leave to get some clear air. A bit like Peter Bell and Tim Kelly,” 7NEWS presenter Adrian Barich wrote.
