#45 Conor McKenna - the first six years

LUCKY TO HAVE HIM. HE IS BECOMING A VALUABLE PLAYER.

He isnt becoming a valuable player.

He IS a valuable player, close to MVP for us.

Shut Conor (and Saad) down = shut Essendon down.

As Redman develops, and Gleeson gets back into the swing of things, that will become less and less true.

Re looking at that Langford goal coming from Connor’s handpass to Gleeson, just showed again the failure of our forwards to lead.
Gleeson is in space with the ball in front of him and about to pick it up and deliver inside 50.Tippa leads but is too close to the kicker to make it a good option.
But McKernan just wanders in towards goal and Langford meanders around next to his opponent waiting to see where Gleeson kicks it.
FFS. There is space. Push you opponent in the chest and lead into the space, It would be an easy kick for Gleeson, instead of a contested mark for Langford.

Langford wins 1-1 close to goal against a weaker opponent instead of leading against a quicker opponent.

Contested Marks - kicks goal - criticised.

Yep. Blitz.

More to the point he probably realised if he led, it would’ve been kicked over his head.

Gleeson still doesn’t come across as a pinpoint user of the ball yet, just put in the general direction and hope for the forward to win it. Has a few mates.

Yes. But note to other players - Don’t give the ball back to a player that has just sprinted and dodged 90 metres.

He had TIPPA free 15m out dead in front too

But it puts him a world ahead of the guys that are kicking it directly to the opposition without our blokes anywhere near it.

Except all this ignores north player directly in front of Gleeson and coming at him, who would have cut off any low pass. Gleeks had to kick it either high or wide. In absence of wide leads, high was probs best option.

I hear we’re definitely bringing in another Irishmen next year.

Did you hear which one, McQuillan or Towey?

No as to who but we’ll surely be taking one.

Ross McQuillan, considered the brightest Irish prospect at last year’s AFL Europe Combine, is expected to join Essendon or Richmond, according to AFL.com.au .

The 20-year-old from County Armagh was last year recognised as one of the best young Gaelic football players in Ireland alongside Geelong’s Stefan Okunbor.

ESSENDON and Richmond are in a two-way race for the pick of this year’s Irish crop.

Ross McQuillan has emerged as the most coveted Irishman from the 2018 AFL Europe Combine, and joined countrymen Ronan Devereux, Peadar Mogan and Luke Towey in trialling with clubs in April.

The 20-year-old is a good athlete, clocked a blistering 2.77sec in winning the 20m sprint at the combine, thrives on physicality and is already showing promise with his kicking on both sides.

At 186cm, McQuillan projects as a utility at AFL level, but his combination of speed, aggression and neat foot skills is proving an attractive proposition.

AFL.com.au understands both the Bombers and Tigers are also interested in Towey, who boasts similar physical traits and strengths to McQuillan.

Both players have already been exposed to senior Gaelic football ranks, a rarity among Ireland’s AFL prospects in the past.

However, McQuillan is the primary target and certain to be at one of those two clubs next season, with a decision imminent.

The County Armagh product would fit in well at Tullamarine, where fellow Irishman and dashing defender Conor McKenna has blossomed into one of Essendon’s most important players.

McKenna leads the AFL in running bounces this year and is averaging career highs in disposals (19.9), rebound 50s (4.6) and metres gained (415.4).

Richmond, on the other hand, has had limited success in this space, with Jamie O’Reilly (four games) and John Heslin (zero) both spending time on the Tigers’ list.

There is already a record 14 Irishmen in the AFL in 2019, with the likelihood that will increase next year.

Can’t have enough red heads in the club.

I do not think that word means what they think it means.

Umm, yeah.
