#45 - Tom Edwards thru 2026

Maybe I’ve got this wrong, but wouldn’t he miss next years preseason?

Shorter recovery timeframes these days, he should be involved in a lot of the pre season, depending on how his body handles it.

OK, well then I’ll say I was wrong, and hopefully he rehabs well.

McCarthy is trying to get back from an ACL this season. I think Docherty also recovered very quickly last year.

Yep he’s lucky he did it this early in the season. Six months rehab should have him moving well and loading up. That takes him right into early pre-season.

Ah well, that’s career over then.

I think they might try Laverde forward to replace Edwards

I don’t mind giving that a go at some point but I’d sooner lay the responsibility on Jones to sink or swim as a key forward before turning to an old, banged up Lav.

Draper/Resting Ruck
Jones
Caddy

That’s tall enough without needing Lav. If Jones doesn’t perform over a 3-4 week period then fair enough. But by that stage Langford will probably be back anyhow.

Didn’t they try that already. He started his career in the forward line.

Yes, they did and apart from suffering from the yips when kicking for goal, he wasn’t too bad at it. His leading patterns were quite good, which helped create space for other forwards. I suspect he’s a bit old for the job now though; he isn’t as mobile as he used to be.

At least we’d have someone in the forward line that could crash packs that has oppo backman looking over their shoulders.

Pretty sure Draper does this better than just about anyone

I think he stunk it up in the VFL too tbh so wouldn’t be rushing for a recall one way or another, at least Jones runs around a bit at a minimum LOL

BOMBERS TO SUPPORT MATURE-AGE RECRUIT

TOM Edwards will miss the rest of 2025 after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament at training on Tuesday, but Essendon will look at rewarding the mature-age recruit after a bright start to his AFL career.

The Bombers hadn’t discussed an extension beyond this season with Edwards’ manager before the devastating injury ahead of the bye.

But after being an emergency in round one before breaking into Brad Scott’s side in round two, where he kicked three goals on debut against Adelaide, Essendon has been impressed by his progress after trialling with the club during the pre-season supplemental selection period.

Edwards earned a rookie contract during a two-week trial at the Hangar in late January/early February, where he starred in an intraclub before kicking four goals in a half against the Western Bulldogs in a match simulation.

The Bombers will sit down to discuss a likely deal for 2026 once the 24-year-old undergoes the knee reconstruction and the dust settles.

The injury is understood to be a regulation ACL tear without any other ligament damage. – Josh Gabelich

Sad _ what else can you say?

Absolutely this. I know we’ve kept guys on too long in the past but he’s done as much as a guy with 4 games under his belt could do, but besides that he’s packed up his life and job and moved state to chase his dream He deserves a chance to rehab, build his upper body and have a proper crack next year. It’s not like we are flush with medium sized forwards let alone ones that have kicked 10 goals in 4 outings.
