I agree. Whilst I donāt want to push Jones Tyers at all, I think heās shown the last month he might be worth considering on another 12 month deal as a defender. Given Ridley / Reid (durability), Mc Kay (not the future) and Hayes (young + ACL history) they might need some reinforcements and heās been sort of interesting to watch his work down back to think thereās no harm

I wasnt very clear how I said that I meant, I would keep Cox and unfortunately Jones is contracted for another year so we dont have a choice.

How and why would it be a difficult call to remove Cox, Jones and McMahon?
For too long Essendon has been a safe haven for list cloggers.

In HAPs defence I think that Van Unen did play a few VFL games for us.

We need to stop handing out charity contracts just because players are good guys or have had a hard run with injuries.
Fact is Edwards has shown nothing at AFL level and at 26yo, thats not good enough for another contract.
Its an easy delist for me.

Iād ditch all of them and keep Perkins heās the only one of those players mentioned able to play footy at an acceptable afl level,(even though itās only occasionally) Spike will sort him out.

Iād say he showed a decent amount before being shafted to a wing by idiot Brad Scott and lost all continuity.

I think Jonesā contract makes him safe. That, and they were willing to give him games at the back end of the year ā it felt like team selection was heavily influenced by whoās going to be at the club next year.
I think Edwards and McMahon will definitely go. The issue with both of them is that theyāre not physical forwards ā theyāre lead and mark players. They can deputize for Caddy as more limited options, but I donāt think they work alongside him (Kyle Langford, as a similar type forward, certainly didnāt this year). Theyāll turn 27 and 25 respectively next year, and I donāt see the case for mature guys who donāt appear to have a ceiling beyond being a back up.
I think Cox probably goes too, but has a better chance of getting a contract if weāre unsuccessful in the trade period. As a key forward, where heās playing his best football in the VFL, he seems to have similar limitations to Edwards and McMahon. He can play elsewhere, albeit he hasnāt done it very well this year. Overall, the quality of his best games at VFL level and his potential for more versatility nudges him ahead for mine.
The other interesting one is Kayle Gerreyn. I presume the trial in defence is over, and heād play forward next year if heās retained. Itās an awkward one, in that they liked his talent to enough to spend a pick in the 30s on him in a very deep draft, but heās shown very little in his first two years to suggest heāll be a player. Iād guess he probably gets a one-year deal, but if he doesnāt, Coxās chances of staying improve.
The other interesting variable is that thereās a handful of key forward prospects that could be in the range of the back end of the first round of the draft / early second second wherre we will have picks (e.g., Jack Pickett, Sam Gayfer, Ethan Herbert, Jack Slattery, Brady Wright). I think one of Cox and Gerreyn survive even if we grab one of those prospects, but I doubt both would.

I would persist with Edwards. Heās ahead of Langford if he puts on more size.

I personally wouldnāt have Langford in my best side as a forward, and Iām not sure heād be in there anywhere else either ā increasingly, he looks like a depth option to me, which could be another factor not in Edwardsā favor.

A few extra list spots or rookie spots courtesy of the AFL would make things interesting for a few of the line ball decisions
I want to keep Gerryen. Great kick. 200cm. Good size and mobility. Forward ruck. I think he trumps others like Cox. Fits the demographic.

I like him, Iād keep him.
He played games off of a knee reco, and played well at times. Has a serious bag of tricks, is a mature head around the club and in the VFL. His taking hangers and such showing kids it ok to have some flair.
Iād keep all of Cox, Gerryn and Edwards on one year deals.
