Geoff was a great player. He was amazing the way he could leap over packs for his screamers - quite often arrived before or after the ball but that didn’t matter. He also played in a pretty brutal age and really wasn’t built for that kind of combat but managed to negotiate hard as nails defenders week after week. I was a boarder at a Melbourne school at the time and hated the incarceration. To escape to Windy Hill on a Saturday and to stand among the crowd (on piled beer cans to be able to see) and watch over time the likes of Geoff, Ronnie Andrews, Neville Fields and Graeme Moss kept me sane for another week behind the walls.
Its an amazing achievement despite Essendon’s woes. Hats off to the kid, he has worked his backside off and is getting rewarded. To think otherwise is just petty.
He was simply my favourite player at that time, and along with Simon Madden and James Hird were the players I’ve enjoyed watching the most over my lifetime.
@SnappyTom we were lucky to have grown up to see some great Essendon sides, but also some long, ordinary seasons. I was there somewhere near you no doubt, standing on empty beer cans at Windy Hill I feel for the young supporters today who have endured our latest lean era. I hope they hang in there and are rewarded like we were.
Go well on Thursday Liam. Give us all something to cheer about.
