50 Best Essendon Wins since 2000 (countdown)

Best Win Since 2000 No. 43

Round 6 2011 vs Gold Coast

Essendon 15.4.94 18.4.112 25.8.158 31.11.197
Gold Coast 0.1.1 5.3.33 7.5.47 8.10.58

Context

  • Essendon had made a solid start to the year under new coach, James Hird, despite coming off a 30 point ANZAC Day loss to competition benchmark, Collingwood.

  • In the previous round, Gold Coast had just won their first game in the club’s short history, coming from 40 points down to defeat Port Adelaide at Football Park.

Why it’s on the list / key moments

  • AKA “The game when Kyle Reimers kicked 8”.

  • Essendon kicked 15 goals in the 1st quarter. Even the very best sides in history haven’t managed the kind of domination on the scoreboard that the Bombers managed early in this game. A 94-1 QTR time scoreline was unthinkable.

  • A poor 2nd quarter was followed up by 7 and 6 goal quarters to put the final margin out to 139 points.

  • Kyle Reimers kicked 8.2, including a dribble goal from close to the boundary line. He claimed the 3 Brownlow votes, the only votes of his career.

Extra notes

  • Michael Hibberd’s debut for Essendon.

  • Essendon bullied the young Suns in the air, winning the Contested Marks 23-6.

What happened next?

  • Essendon followed up with solid wins against West Coast and Brisbane to put themselves in the top 4. A 5-game losing streak brought the Bombers back to reality. The year ended in a humiliating Elimination Final loss to Carlton.

  • Gold Coast won their second game the following week against local rivals, Brisbane. The newly-formed club only won one more game in what was an expectedly rough first year in the AFL.
