For those interested in watching the 2000 Ansett Cup GF in full:
If pre season was included 2000 ANSETT Cup GF absolutely makes the list. Somewhere in the 30s maybe.
Highlights how absolutely ridiculous 2000 was. 29-1 including pre season and finals
1993 Fosters Cup GF was also a banger
JJ’s bump on Blakey at the opening bounce was a thing of beauty and really set the tone and intent of the playing group for the rest of the season.
I forgot that Carey got reported for whacking fletcher early
That’s my main memory of the game.
It wasn’t the opening bounce, it was about three goals in.
But when you see the hit, you appreciate how dedicated the aggression was with that team. I don’t think that hit was ‘dirty’ for the time. It was just a strong contest.
As did Barnard giving Blakey a gobful as he lay on the floor.
It was for a tie not a win though.
It just sunk into me, imagine a hawthorn, brisbane, geelong, wce, pies forum doing this countdown
Meanwhile, we are just chucking in normal H&A wins for pretty much….everything
Not taking away the idea of this thread or the effort - it is great.
Its just a sobering reality of how sh*t we are, more so when we get down to the top 15ish
Their 50 worst losses thread would be pretty average though.
Port made a failed attempt to break a crowd noise record at 1/2 or 3/4 time in this game.
Joe was best on ground, but Josh Green turned the match.
I remember him being surprisingly handy. Shame that was about as good a game as he played for us.
Best Win Since 2000 No. 35
Round 2 2016 vs Melbourne
| Essendon | 2.2.14 | 7.7.49 | 8.10.58 | 11.14.80 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne | 1.4.10 | 6.4.40 | 7.7.49 | 10.7.67 |
Context
-
Essendon were expected by many to not win a game all season after the bulk of the 2012 playing list were suspended for 12 months. The Bombers had suffered a 61 point loss to Gold Coast to open the season.
-
Essendon fans marched from Federation Square to the MCG to show their support for the club and the 34 players banned as a result of the supplements scandal.
-
The Bombers simply had no hint of a hope to win this game despite carrying a fair bit of experience in its 22. Only 14 of the 22 players on the day were on the list the previous season, and 8 of those 14 players had played < 25 games for the club. 4 top-up players (signed after the bans in January) took the field.
-
Melbourne had won their first game of the season against GWS by 2 points after a last quarter comeback at the MCG.
Why it’s on the list / key moments
-
Despite the close scoreline, the Bombers didn’t lose a single quarter. It was a full 4 quarters of effort, emphasised by the Dons winning the uncontested possessions 313-179.
-
Melbourne kicked 4 goals in a row to take a 6 point lead halfway through the 4th quarter. It would have been understandable to think that the Bombers had run out of legs, but instead they found a second wind to come roaring home with the last 3 goals.
-
Joe Daniher took a 1-on-3 hanger halfway through the 1st quarter.
-
Moment of the day was undoubtedly Darcy Parish’s goal on the run to all but seal the victory in only his second game.
Extra notes
-
Michael Hartley’s debut for Essendon (including his only goal for the club).
-
Zach Merrett’s first time winning 3 Brownlow votes. He’d collect 19 in a 3-win season.
What happened next?
-
Essendon had to wait until Round 21 for their next victory, despite some honourable losses along the way. They finished 18th but ended the year with a win against Carlton that suggested that 2017 would provide long-awaited excitement.
-
Melbourne won 2 of their next 3 games but laboured to 11th on the ladder.

Scooter’s first March to the ‘G, what a day
Did you see the 50 worst losses thread? It might be more your thing ![]()
He was just unlucky on timing. he just happened to land at the club at the only time for the last 20+ years when we had 2 legit good small forwards in the tream.
He’d get a game now, easy.
My recollection of Josh Green is that he got by on footy smarts rather than having some athletic attribute which made him dangerous as a small forward.
But yeah, he’d be well ahead of Guelfi and Gresham if listed now.
Joe Daniher had quite a game: 21 disposals, 15 marks (7 contested), 2 goals (4 behinds).
That’s a really dominant showing by a key forward.
Who?
The missus and I took part in the march and went to the game. It was a proud day for the club, absolutely one of the best I’ve ever had at the footy.
