Round 4 2019 vs Brisbane

Essendon 7.2.44 11.6.72 13.8.86 17.10.112
Brisbane Lions 2.2.14 3.5.23 7.8.50 9.11.65

Context

  • Essendon had begun the season slowly with a 1-2 W/L record and 78.3%, including two very poor losses to GWS and St Kilda.

  • Brisbane were 3-0 and 2nd on the ladder, including a comprehensive win against reigning premiers West Coast in Round 1.

Why it’s on the list / key moments

  • Essendon played close to a perfect first half of football, leading 72-23 at HT.

  • New recruit, Dylan Shiel, showed signs of providing what Essendon fans had been hoping for, frequently contributing to fast breaks through the middle of the ground as the Bombers played confident and free-flowing football.

  • Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti kicked a career-best 7.1 including the final kick of the game to finish off a great afternoon in the autumn sun.

  • Brisbane improved in the second half but Essendon still maintained a healthy final margin.

Extra notes

  • Mitch Brown earned his only ever Brownlow vote as an Essendon player, thanks to his 25 disposals and 3.1. Strangely, he would earn his only other Brownlow votes the following year while playing against Essendon for his new club, Melbourne, with a less remarkable 20 disposals and 0.2.

What happened next?

  • Essendon put on a clinic against North Melbourne the following round before losing to Collingwood in a nailbiter on ANZAC Day in a game that many Essendon fans still aren’t over. A rollercoaster of a season eventually ended in a disappointing Elimination Final defeat at the hands of West Coast.

  • Brisbane proved to be a much improved side, finishing 2nd on the ladder, making the finals for the first time since 2009. They bowed out in straight sets.

What a wonderful afternoon at the footy. We ended up sitting with my sister and her kids (who we rarely get to a game with. Maybe only once or twice a year). The kids were playing/laughing all day enjoying Wallas goals.

My favourite games that I have seen in person

Vs eagles 2004. Hird kicks the winner

Vs Brisbane 2003. Marvel was absolutely rocking that night, we finally had beaten Brisbane for the first time since the GF

Anzac Day 2004- my first Anzac Day match. Loved every second of it. Only missed one Anzac Day game since

2013 vs Carlton. We’re down by a bit at halftime. Carlisle went forward and turned the game

2009 vs stkilda- we stopped their streak

Vs bulldogs 2011- hirds first game in charge. We smashed them

2002 vs west coast- elimination final. My first finals game.

2004 vs Melbourne- elimination final win

2013 Anzac Day. My favourite Anzac Day match.

2009 vs hawthorn. Big halftime comeback. Lloyd almost decapitates Sewell. We run them off their feet and steamroll them in the last

2012 vs Carlton. Lonergan cripples Carrazzo.we physically smashed them all game. Crameri kicked a bag

There was a game against Carlton on a Sunday afternoon where I think they hit the front early in the last, then we switched back on and won by 5 or so goals?
And the other one I liked against them was when Lovett runs through the middle, seeming jogging yet making space between him and Turnover and kicks truly from about 50. The look on that poor losers face trying to chase Lovett down is just a thing of beauty

West coast vs Bombers round 22 2007.

It wasn’t a victory, but I was proud to be a Bomber supporter that day. The guys played some fantastic football.

Lloyd knocked out Judd in the opening minutes

Round 12 2017 vs Port Adelaide

Essendon 7.6.48 12.9.81 14.13.97 19.17.131
Port Adelaide 1.3.9 4.5.29 7.7.49 8.13.61

Context

  • Essendon sat 12th on the ladder and were coming off the back of 2 respectable losses to top 4 sides Richmond and GWS.

  • Port Adelaide were 5th with a game-in-hand on the top 4 and an impressive 148.6%. They were in good form having held Hawthorn to a goalless first half in Round 11 and had lost by only 2 points to a solid Geelong side at Kardinia Park in Round 10.

  • Click here for the Essendon goals/highlights

Why it’s on the list / key moments

  • A scintillating first half, going in 81-29 at HT. This included a flurry of consecutive goals to start the game which saw the Bombers lead 40-1 at the 17 minute mark of the 1st quarter.

  • Essendon’s new-look forward line after the return of the banned players looked to be top-4 worthy already. Cale Hooker was the best on the night, kicking 5 goals in the first half to set up the win. Joe Daniher and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti kicked 4 each, while James Stewart, Orazio Fantasia and Josh Green all appeared to be gelling well.

  • McDonald-Tipungwuti provided the highlight of the night with a fantastic solo goal, making light work of Hamish Hartlett as the result was put beyond doubt early in the 4th quarter.

Extra notes

  • Essendon won the disposals 448-362.

What happened next?

  • Essendon came back from their bye to lose in heartbreaking fashion against Sydney at the SCG, followed by an embarrassing loss to lowly Brisbane at home. They’d bow out to Sydney in an embarrassing Elimination Final defeat.

  • Port Adelaide recovered well to earn a home Elimination Final against West Coast, but famously lost in extra time to a Luke Shuey goal after the siren.

If this game was NBA Jam, every single player would have been on fire for 4 quarters that night.

It was just one of those nights where every kick hit its mark and every bounce went our way.

When this forward line was on, it was something pretty special. I heard the year after we added Jake Stringer to it, so I assume it got even better!

Which year was that?

Was this the “Honor Conor” review thread?

Edit: yes.

I think this was one of the few games I left early.
I recall I left at a smashing against Port where we were well up at half time but I thought it was after work, so don’t recall it being a Saturday game. Maybe I worked that weekend.

I thought I deleted this game and replaced it with highlights last pre-season. But it’s still there. The Brisbane win has remained though. It’s tough to delete this one.

I didn’t go to either of those games. And I didn’t even catch them live on tv either. And I don’t think I’ve done a re-watch of either since.
But they are definitely worthy of top 50.

I probably would have had the Brisbane game higher than the Port game. Simply because of the Tippa experience. In the last ten years, the more memorable positive moments have involved him in some form.

I think I might re-watch these two games over the next few days.

Just remembered the comeback game in 2001. I was fortunate to be there in a corporate box. The free beer got me through the first qtr and a bit.

The only other Port home game at Docklands like this might be the Round 2 2001 game, but that’s a whole 16 years earlier so probably not.

The game versus the Dogs in 2011

There was a guy who used to sell The Big Issue outside Flagstaff Station who was a mad Bulldogs fan. We never saw him after that game and it was said that was a bridge too far for him.

The 2012 game vs Carlton. That was the game a certain Age columnist lied about. She said that we ran away from them late, proving that we were “on something”. We were playing the Anzac Day game only a few days later, took a big lead into the 3rd and then slowed down to conserve our energy. We were 8 goals in front at 3/4 time 89-42, those Blue scum kicked 5 of the first 6 to reduce the margin to 4 goals and storming home. Angus goaled at the 21 minute mark, they replied and Crameri kicked the sealer late, giving him 5.6 for the game. She claimed that we had unwarranted reserves of energy, even though FCFC kicked 6 of 7 in the last. And when challenged, she doubled down.

2009…

Every time I think of NBA jam all I can think of is the commentator saying “he’s heating up”

“Boomshakalaka.”
