Essendon’s most recent 100+ point loss (surprisingly) at GWS in 2023. Up there as well. Needed to win that to get into finals that year against a genuine competitor and lost by a massive 126 point margin in what was a horror show of a match for the bombers.
Shocking considering the bombers were 5th 6 weeks prior and were having a great season
How about the next week. 74K turn up to see us kick 3 goals (Pies had 8 by qtr time). Walla’s last game, starting as sub. Cwood supporters next to me were hoping we’d get a goal just to even things up- just shameful.
The 2007 version of Mal Michael was still a strong bugger, and was hard to beat 1v1.
But he was about as slow as a player could be, and fev just pushed off him and torched him on the lead for essentially every one of those scores. It was a bad match up and it was pretty obvious how bad it was.
But in typical Sheedy fashion, he didn’t think to make a move. Didn’t give Fletcher a crack, or even a young Ryder. Or McPhee. Or anybody else. Just let Fev run riot and win the game for them, without even trying to stop it.
Yep a restricted pre-season before that Swans game Round 1 ‘15 but still never should have fumbled that game - lead got out to about 40 late Q3, then didn’t score in the last - genuine wtf.
2015 ended up being a disaster, but we looked seriously impressive for large parts of the first two games against the previous season’s grand finalists. Our compromised pre-season really killed us in the round 1 loss, and my memory of the last quarter is of Franklin goaling from a very soft free kick and Goddard making a bad mistake on a kick-out at crucial times. The same thing almost happened against the Hawks in round 2 before a late rally and Hooker’s inside-out torp goal. But we were definitely looking good at that stage. The wheels completely fell off after WADA announced it was appealing the AFL tribunal’s decision, it must have been so devastating for the players.
My recollection is that Sheedy actually moved Fletcher to the forward line after half-time and it was then the Fev really cut loose. It was probably the game that sealed Sheedy’s fate; Jackson was angry and had warned him previously against doing self-indulgent stuff like that.
Two Hawks games that come to mind were the Rnd 17 2012 Friday night clash at Marvel, where Luke Hodge playing his first game coming back from a knee injury, scored 5 goals in the first three quarters before being subbed off at three quarter time for a rest. They smashed us by 94 pts that night.
Then the following year at the same venue with the Dave Evans “collapse” in the rooms before the match. Playing for a top 4 spot we scored the first three out of four goals of the match and the Dons fans were up and about. Then Melksham ironed out Roughead and the mood in the crowd turned pretty feral after that. It was the most intense that I’ve ever experienced at a match in the crowd as it felt like a powderkeg was about to explode with the Hawks fans starting to throw out Saga inspired insults at us Bomber fans. There were a lot of angry fans from both sides there that night that I was expecting a few spot fires to breakout in the crowd but thankfully that all disipated by the end of the game with them running out eventual 56pt winners.
Yeah! It’s been a carnt of a past 25 years of losses for the Bombers.
Some of those close Sydney losses still hurt. Get reamed by the umpires in Sydney and then some bullshit at the end gives them the win. Plugger’s point, Rampe goal post, the Gary Rohan slam down.
At one point, I think they had a terrible win-loss record by less than a goal against any other team. Against us, they had a great record.
Yeah wow just looking back and he played in some genuine horror shows.
Late 2012 v. Adelaide maybe an obscure contender for this list - felt like the last proper chance to stay in the 8, and the lead at HT was 22 points. Had a few chances late to steal it.
At the time, we already looked cooked, so if anything it felt like a bonus that we were in it until very late. The Crows were a good side that year and almost knocked off the Hawks at the G in the prelim.
that random 4:40 sunday game against collingwood during the saga after the wheels had fallen off. Dont even know how to describe it but we didnt give a whimper all day, it was horrible
You’re spot on. Our form had dipped massively, we’d been absolutely smashed by Geelong and Hawthorn in the previous two games, but our guys played with a lot of heart that day against a team that just missed the GF that year, and I overheard a Crows fan on my way out of the pub say that the Bombers deserved to win the game. Watson got the three Brownlow votes, but I also remember a terrific game by Courtenay Dempsey. It was the best game I ever saw him play.
As much as the loss hurt, I remember it being an especially cruel day for Jason Winderlich. It was his 100th game (it took him a loooong time to get to the milestone), only his second game of the season. He kicked four goals in just over a half opposed to Brent Reilly, who was having a very good season and made the AA squad, then he did his hammy. Again. Season over. Licha remains one of my all-time favourite EFC players, but that day was kinda indicative of his career unfortunately. Enormously talented, incredibly fragile.
