The common thread for a lot of these is the pathetic attitude shown on field. After playing some quite good football for a few weeks and beating a quite good team or two we come to a game where, if we win, we make the 8, or even the top 4, and we’re playing a team that on form is no better than us and possibly considerably below us, but on the day (or night), the team goes out on the field and just doesn’t fire a shot. No pressure, no attack, no run, no endeavour, and we’ve lost the game by half time, or quarter time. It’s happened again and again and again and again for 25 ■■■■■■■ years and I’m ■■■■■■■ sick of it. And it doesn’t look like changing.
In that stretch of embarrassing losses to Melbourne, the 1 point loss in the middle of 2014 flies under the radar.
A win would have entrenched us in the 8. Had lead all day, but not convincingly so. A coast to coast goal to Salem gave them the lead late. One of three wins for them that year.
There was a pivotal play late in that game where Hocking just needed to make a routine tackle. It would’ve saved the match, but he somehow made a meal of it and Salem went on to kick the winner.
I was sitting in that pocket and had a clear view of it.
Heath was the last player you’d expect would be guilty of that sin, which made it all the worse.
I wouldn’t have the Richmond loss this year as top 50. The teams were close to even on paper going in, then when Martin went down it sealed the loss.
Was that the game when our blokes kept doing strings and Adelaide ran over us? Was around the time Tex Walker got good
Do Footscray next.

Geelong better than nearly every club in the last decade have exposed our weaknesses. More than any team, Geelong have exploited our inability to handle pressure and cope with limited time and space resulting in mistakes and turnovers. Geelong have closed down space and monstered us physically better than any team consistently over a decade.
Here is Hebatron’s masterful take on that match; “hello darkness my old friend” :
Geelong better than any team have succeeded in closing down space and exposing our ins unity to handle pressure and physicality. You can hear their coaches saying…. “Hit them hard, don’t give them time with ball in hand and dial up pressure, they will fold”. No club has done it better than Geelong in exposing our deficiencies.
Good grief, Alex Witherden got two brownlow votes.
I sat near some West Coast fans at a game (I think they were playing Melbourne?) last year who described Alex Witherden as the most useless footballer they’d ever seen. Which, given they follow West Coast, is quite a sledge.
Yep. The game where Redman played one of his many ‘gave up’ games (and we think he’s a leader!), Heppell didn’t give his all and Stringer was playing injured and selfishly. A shocker..
We were a miserable mess in the Qld Hub. Absolute garbage.
My guess is there are more of these Covid impacted games to come on this list.
And to think that we beat Brisbane by 8 goals a year before at the MCG.
I could have included many of them, but have tried to only include the absolute worst, as it was a pretty rough time and the games were thankfully shorter which made them feel a bit superficial.
2016 and 2020 games mostly go through to the keeper for me. Pretty unique circumstances.
It probably doesn’t make the top 50, but Anzac Day 2014 was pretty disappointing. To jump the Pies and lead by five goals at quarter time, only to concede six in the second and go into halftime level was trash. Dane Swan running riot still burns.
the “bonk” sound effect at 2:07 is probably the funniest thing ever put on youtube
The 2016 loss to Brisbane at Marvel might be the only one that stands out, but it was pretty disappointing and worthy of this list.
One of the few games we had a realistic shot at winning, as the Leppitsch Lions were awful. A good crowd turned up too with some anticipation, and we put on a complete shitshow.
@Ta0Ta another future thread would be rank the last 25 years by season, obvious number one but there would some very tough seasons to place.
In jogging my memory i was going through 2007, we had the already mentioned FC loss amd that horrd Richmond one at the end of the season but we also beat both grand finalist from the previous season by a point in back to back weeks including at the SCG.
