FOR years, Lance Franklin has thrilled AFL fans with his ability to launch and convert long-range goals from all sorts of distances while defying all sorts of obstacles.
For years, Franklin was unopposed in this area.
But now, Buddy has company from an emerging Essendon star that has his teammates astonished.
Now, with 21 goals from his first eight games, Joe Daniher is developing into an All-Australian smoky — and one of the game’s most exciting players.
“He’s an explosive player,” Essendon teammate David Zaharakis told foxfooty.com.au.
“He’s one of those players that you love watching when you’re out there because anywhere from 50 or 60 (metres) out, that left foot can put it through the middle.
“I’m glad he’s on my team and we’re not playing against him.”
In late April, Brendon Goddard witnessed first-hand Daniher’s colossal Anzac Day performance where he won best on ground honours for his three-goal, 16-disposal game.
The Bombers veteran couldn’t help but compare Daniher to one of the game’s great forwards.
“It’s kind of in the Buddy mould,” Goddard told the Herald Sun.
“Buddy was the first to have that agility and sideways movement (with) speed as well.”
The one area of Daniher’s game that will always be a hot topic is his goalkicking accuracy.
From his 29 set-shots so far this year, he’s kicked 12.15 with two complete misses. While they’re far from diabolical numbers, they’re still somewhat alarming.
Zaharakis has a cheeky solution.
“He’s better on the run than set-shots. If we can handball it to him rather than kick nit to him, he’d kick more than he miss,” Zaharakis laughed.
But after an extraordinary 1.6 against Melbourne a fortnight ago, Daniher has booted 8.2 in the past two weeks. Hopefully the tables have turned in this career-best season.
One of the most impressive aspects of Daniher’s 2017 season to date has been his incredible workrate for such a big man, who is averaging career-high time on ground (91.6 per cent).
Unlike other key forwards in the game, the 23-year-old is working harder and higher up the field to win the ball, rather than relying on wresting and one-on-one contests. That’s particularly crucial this year, as the Bombers are ranked 17th for inside 50 differential this season.
Daniher this season is winning his highest rate of midfield disposals for his career, hence why he’s averaging career-high disposals (16.2), uncontested possessions (10.8), marks (7.8), score involvements (8.1) and metres gained (360).
But most importantly, Daniher is working just as hard inside the forward 50, averaging a career-high 3.1 marks in the forward arc — ranked sixth in the league.
Essendon coach John Worsfold was thrilled with Daniher’s performance against Geelong, where he booted a season-high 5.2 from 16 disposals and six marks. Worsfold pointed out Daniher’s ability to kick big goals in big moments, in particular the one that arrested the fast-finishing Cats’ momentum deep into the final quarter.
“He showed great leadership throughout the whole game, not only in those critical moments but in other parts of the game. I think he helped us set up the victory early in the game, he was outstanding,” Worsfold said.
“He did some wonderful individual acts today, but it wasn’t about that. It was about what we’re trying to achieve as a team.”
Blokes getting lit up all the joint this week… we could be in for a mighty let down…
we reproduce that crap we dished out against Melbourne I’ll spew up!
Remember the years where if someone kicked four in a game it was a massive haul? And our best bet was it was Angus H Monfries? Joe kicks five and I’m forced to be reminded of it.
4th for total shots and he’s playing higher up the ground (and in the ruck) than anyone else in the top handful. Including OOB he’s just about had more shots than anyone in the comp. Running at <53% accuracy, if he gets that to ~65 he’s winning the Coleman and ripping the ■■■■ out of the competition.
Interestingly, Buddy and all his improved kicking accuracy is currently running at 54%…
I think we need a heatmap of his shots on goal, so we can obviously pass some sort of extra judgement, and would be ■■■■■■ interesting.
