Its difficult to interpret exactly what Worsfold meant in his statement,
"But what we found once we stopped him doing everything and rested him, he was a lot sorer than he was letting on.”
It could be that while the club did know he was sore, they did not know the seriousness of it until too late because Joe had not disclosed the severity
OR
Once they “stopped him doing everything”, it may be that the soreness increased rather than reduced. That sounds counter intuitive, but might be fact.
Nice post. Sometimes seems like people think surgery is akin to collecting a ‘health potion’ in some 90’s computer game - groin surgery medi-pack - zap!- back to full health.
Collingwood have had more soft tissue injuries than anyone this year!!!
Not that I have any idea what an MD would have to do with soft tissue injuries. Specialist yes, physio yes, osteo maybe. EP yes.
MD, no.
Anyone who’s played more than 50 games would’ve played with injuries that cause them significant discomfort.
Unless you believe the 5-10 guys going in for surgery straight after the last game all got injured that week!!
He thought he could get through it. He wanted to push through it. He was wrong.
That’s it. That’s all.
it seems odd to single joe out for it on both occasions, if its just a part and parcel thing?
I accept that players would play through pain on a constant basis, but on the flipside you constantly hear players to tell themselves/ coaches that they arent right to play and basically put themselves out of selection ‘body just didnt feel right/ didnt want to go in underdone’ etc etc etc. I think theres probably a fine line between being able to push through the pain and performing and succumbing to it, but it seems now twice Joe has not been able identify where that line sits for him.
How does this compare to the way the industry standard is - ie; all other clubs and how they manage injuries with rest/management/surgery? Important to know so that we can tell whether it actually is correct that we’re doing things wrong, or that this is what happens in a sport like footy.
Depressing but not unexpected. Anyone know the chances of him coming back and playing at his best in the future? I know worst scenario is he’s stuffed, but realisticlly is he a good chance to get back to his best? Better than 50% chance?
