#6 Joe Daniher - drank a beer

Are you sure you didn’t send it to Triple J Unearthed?
I’m pretty sure it’s on heavy rotation.

Joe loads up: Key Don pushes towards full training

Joe Daniher is ramping up his training loads in the hope of rejoining the full program

ESSENDON spearhead Joe Daniher completed his biggest session of the pre-season on Wednesday, returning to the track after a week sidelined by illness.

Daniher trained away from the main group, completing a heavy running load, set shots and one-on-one work with assistant coach Ben Rutten.

Having overcome last week’s bout of conjunctivitis, Daniher continues to increase his loads after a minimal schedule pre-Christmas following a 2018 campaign derailed by osteitis pubis.

The Bombers remain hopeful the 2017 All Australian will re-join full training before the team’s first JLT Community Series clash against Carlton in 43 days’ time.

Daniher was joined on the club’s second training oval at Tullamarine by big man Cale Hooker and Josh Begley, who clocked long running sessions.

Orazio Fantasia, Marty Gleeson, David Myers, Tom Bellchambers, Conor McKenna, Jayden Laverde and Mark Baguley were put through their paces before heading behind closed doors.

Captain Dyson Heppell was spotted on the track early on before heading indoors and re-emerging in long discussions with coaching staff during competitive drills.

Prized recruit Dylan Shiel, speedster Adam Saad and last year’s best and fairest Devon Smith weren’t sighted during the open session that lasted close to two hours.

Defender Mason Redman, who is returning from a fractured ankle, completed light rehabilitation work as the rest of the group was put through match simulation, with midfielder Zach Merrett a clear standout.

Tom Hird, son of James, and Mason Fletcher, son of Dustin, enjoyed their second day at the club after being introduced to the pre-season schedule on Tuesday.

Hird, 17, lined up in match simulation – opposed at times to Jake Stringer – as he continues to learn the basics of the game, having played soccer as a junior.

Fletcher, 18, was kept to light duties as he works through back stress fractures that saw him choose to remain in the TAC Cup for 2019 and not nominate for the 2018 NAB AFL Draft.

Both are eligible to be selected by the Bombers as father-son players in this year’s NAB AFL Draft.

I think they look on these pages.

There was discussion about McKenna on here the other day and the very next day a photo of him went up at training.

I think they look on these pages… with mild amusement.

It’s almost seems as if they have more media content as they get closer to the season…

If Blitz is asking for Daniher updates, you can bet your ■■■■ that the media is asking just as much.

Despite viral conjunctivitis delaying his start to 2019, star forward Joe Daniher’s recovery from osteitis pubis has gathered momentum.

Crow said the club was satisfied with the 24-year-old’s recent progress.

“Apart from a small interruption with his viral conjunctivitis – a systemic illness that can knock you around a little bit – he’s had a really solid month of training,” he said.

“In that time, he’s built up to be able to do an 11km session next week. We’re really happy with the volume he’s getting in, and he’s starting to do a lot more football movements.

“What we need to start to work on is his top speed and getting him back into training drills, which we’ll do when he’s ready.”

Plus 10km sessions is great news. If there’s no aggravation at high intensity he’ll be right to go at start of season.

Yeah the video shows him sprinting too. I was worried about how slow he was running in the footage yesterday but all good now.

Yes… one would hope you were…

I am personally getting a little annoyed by the trolls in this forum. Don’t mind the occasional sarcastic banter, but really, when you continually do it, it grows rather thin, and these people lose any credibility they may once have.

I believe Essendon have done exactly the right thing for Daniher. It’s not about this season, they want to build him up so the probability of a recurrence of this injury ever again, drops significantly. Massive amount of core strength, and then build the running up. No point in running till the core strength and flexibility is there, otherwise he is highly likely to get it again. From memory Hepps did a similar program a few years ago. The medicos know what they are doing guys. Have some faith.
