#6 - Jye Caldwell - thru 2028

we wait too long to off load players and drop the value.

if he wanted out now I would take a late second and be fine with it.

Remember this day from 4 years ago, but no he never had a run with role.

Two jobs, two wins for the Bombers
Not surprisingly Essendon coach Ben Rutten identified Lachie Neale and Charlie Cameron as Brisbane’s two danger men. With that in mind he assigned Jye Caldwell to run with Neale all day and Jake Kelly – who was given a reprieve from being dropped following the late withdrawal of Mason Redman through the League’s health and safety protocols – to defend Cameron. It was a resounding two-from-two for the Bombers, with Caldwell keeping Neale to 21 disposals and Kelly blanketing Cameron (12 touches and one goal).

Per AFL Player Ratings, he was the 36th highest rated mid last year.

I know top 50 doesn’t sound like a lot, but there are 18 teams. Being a top 50 mid means you are a top 3 mid on a team, which is actually an indicator you are a pretty good player.

Agree. If he wanted out I’d take unders, don’t keep anyone that doesn’t want to be there.

But, part of the leadership group this year I think? I don’t see him wanting out atm so in that case I’d say he will be kept.

A few of those other senior mids though….

no one has said he hasnt had run with roles but comparing stats over a full career with players known to be run with players was silly

Not injured - why isn’t he playing

Maybe a couple of strikes off field, could be personal reasons who honestly knows.

This is going to be one of those ones where the first Monday after the season he gets booked in for like 13 different surgeries isn’t it (despite not appearing on the injury list all year).

Saw him on the TV the other day and he looked very preppy. Had a noticeable limp

It must be tough mentally on all of the established players, The kids are probably happy to be just out there chasing a kick and getting games in the AFL, but the senior players must be doing it hard

Fingers crossed Jye can bounce back in 2027. He just hasn’t hit his straps at all this season. To be sitting 32nd in the Nobby is a fair reflection on how poor he has been.

Surely some sort of injury cloud, hopefully gets sorted

I really rate Caldwell. Not sure if it’s an injury or just bad form, but i hope he comes back firing next season.

Up there with his best game of the season - yes a low bar. As I said last week getting back to his best form is vital for 2027.

Why aren’t we using this bloke as a tagger? You can’t be letting blokes like Gulden get 47 disposals. He has shown in the past he can shut good players down and I have no idea what role he is really playing at the moment.

I get the feeling Solly wanted to back our mids today and was disappointed we didn’t try to clamp down a bit more.
He sent Sharp to Warner to start the second quarter but not sure that really worked. Sometimes your opponents are just too good and the Swans have a pretty quick and smart midfield mix

He actually earned his spot tonight, for one of the only times all year. Well done.
