This is what I thought….and Brad Scott had no idea about the meeting with Mitchell until it was public knowledge. That alone should mean Zach’s goose is cooked at Essendon. He can’t be captain going forward and, for mine, cannot play another first team game for the club, regardless of whether he is traded or not.
Rather fittingly given the Hawks involvement, this needs to be our line in the sand.

We really should have learned our lesson in front loading deals about 12 years ago. It’s a sign of how ■■■■ we are that we have to keep front loading a contract to anyone on our list who can kick a ball within 3 metres of a teammate’s chest.

There is no way Merrett is at Essendon next year. Club will play hard ball and try and get best outcome.
Club should actually contact other clubs and ask the question. What can you offer us.

Well it might be, but it’s not very smart. If we can’t agree terms with another club he might be stuck at the Bombers, where I can’t imagine he’ll be captain and I don’t imagine he’ll be getting a rapturous reception from us. There will be enormous pressure from to have Zach ply his trade in the VFL next year, away from players that are actually committed to the club.
He’s messed up his career at the Bombers, whatever eventuates.
