#7 Zerrett - could double his Crichton/Trevor Barkers by 2027

Maybe…but I’d be looking at Hooker, Hurley, Myers, Heppell and that collection of players that were good blokes.

Champion

I think it was around the start of the 3rd were the commentators observed that merrett was a little down on his usual output/impact.

It was around that time he picked up maybe 7 or 8 touches and he was just surgical with it. Huge ‘hurt factor’ with every touch.

He’s absolutely arrived as an AFL captain.

i think a captain at time needs to trust his team to right the ship, once it became evident that it wasn’t quite enough, he imposed himself with supreme authority and it was brilliant to see.

Laid a magnificent hip and shoulder on someone too.

Last 30 secs straight lines the contest, immediately up & at it with two more pressure acts.

he destroyed whitfield in that

For balance, I’m happy to report that Hawthorn Auskick is absolutely dominated by Essendon supporting boys and girls

legendary player, stood up yet again today

that ■■■■■■■ hoyne took great satisfaction this week in reporting that champion data ranks him ~70th-best in the comp, how does he not look at that number and immediately realise his ranking model must be complete bs

I wonder what hoynes expected IQ is?

Yep, the game was over as a contest and he was still chasing, harassing and pressuring everyone

Was well held in the first half, then exploded in the 2nd half

How do we rate this guy comparatively as a captain right now?

Best since hird

Merrett belongs to select few Essendon players/captains. Yet many more years of football ahead of him. He will surpass Hirdy.

Needs the Chaz, NS and Flag 1st, the opportunity to play in the biggest games at the pointy end will determine where he ranks. if we go on H&A season he’s right at the top, but we play for a bigger prize.

Duel premiership player and captain, with a Brownlow… I’d take it

Hird lost two of his prime years because of his foot injury as well don’t forget

I dispute the premise that a great captain needs individual achievements or even the team playing particularly well.

Isaac Heeney is pure class and I would not seperate Zerrett and him as current champions of the game.

Yes we do, he is going to win me a flag before I die.
