We haven’t had a player like him since hird.
I’ve just posted this in another thread, but his kicking and decision making hasn’t been great this year. Tries to do too much all the time. Needs to take the easy option occasionally.
I’m not saying he’s not a great player, but I feel that he thinks everything is left to him to create the play. Similar to Martin off half back last year.
I’m depends how many games we win, he gets votes in
One thing which is pretty clear with Zach is he gets the umpires eye.
He is a fair chance to have polled in every game so far this season because of that. So I reckon he’ll be sitting on 6-8 votes already.
Keeps playing as he is and he’ll be a good shot, even if we don’t win many games.
I think our better kickers are being told to go for those sorts of kicks more often. Nail them, and one great kick can result in a goal. Turn it over and if the defenders are set up well enough we should be able to defend the turnover.
Our worse kicks should play more conservatively, but Zach, Redman, Martin, reid, saad should all be trying to get creative imo.
Are you sure?
And this one:
Champion Data’s top 10 AFL players in 2025 after Round 4
4. Zach Merrett (Essendon)
“Last year he was high, he was top 50 in the competition. This year, all damage. 70 per cent of his ball has been won forward of centre. Last year, 40 per cent of ball was won forward of centre.”
Happy for players to go for their kicks, but sometimes a short pass inside 50 is the better option than trying to hit up a player 50m away.
He is the leading the club for:
- goals
- disposals
- kicks
- Handballs
- Score involvements
- Goal assists
- Inside 50s
Haven’t had someone dominate like that since Hird
Did anyone else see Zach getting his hammy iced up in the rooms after the game?
Fingers crossed…
Has seemed really out of sorts tonight. Is he crook or something?
Up until 3 QTR time as I wrote this, I haven’t seen him play with such low care factor/low energy in a long time. And a number of very strange decisions with ball in hand. Often going wide rather than forward.
Didn’t someone say that he had his calf iced after last week’s game?
I reckon he was getting belted by WC players every time he was near the ball he looked farked off
None of his team mate botherd to help him
Definitely carrying something, could see it from his contests. Was still fairly good, but fingers crossed he is right for friday
Injured or otherwise, WCE targeted him… as all teams should. We’ve got very little else.
He’s our best player by the length of the Flemington Straight. Stop him and you’ll stop Essendon…
