Playing Merrett in the reserves for two years would be idiotic and self defeating.
We’d miss out on his undeniable onfield skills plus lose the opportunity to receive some decent draft capital.
Would achieve nothing, and make Essendon not only the laughing stock of the league (although probably already are), but seed great doubts to detrimental effect in the minds of every current and future AFL player about the sort of workplace that exists at Essendon.
Remember this is the 2020’s, not the 1820’s!

I cannot stand the thought of Hawthorn screwing us with this trade but also, Merrett cannot come back to the club after this.
Yes, he said he’d be professional but he basically ■■■■ on the club and disrespected his team mates. We can’t have that kind of toxic behaviour in the club.
Difficult few weeks ahead I’d imagine.
