He did come back and play with us and I remember at the time Hawks being ■■■■■■ that he didn’t come back at play with them.
He probably supports the Hawks more now because of how bad we have been for the last 20 years and wants to enjoy watching football.
And McGrath reverted to his usual serviceable and occasionally panicky self from then on. Maybe captaincy gives him some extra jolt and he might be a good interim, but I’d prefer a player who just does it regardless of their position in the hierarchy, and is dependably good week in week out leading.
A bit of a brain fart I woke up with regarding Zerrett as Captain/a leader at the club. In the blitz echo chamber, what is the consensus on who Merrett’s ‘group’ are on the list? The guys who he’s been mates with I guess? Lav? Stringer? Previously Daniher? Parish? Ridley? Bellchambers? There’s been a bit of posting about his mates all leaving and I’m in part wondering roughly who is that group? I’m wondering about that because these are the names he would have had some level of influence over in terms of who should be following his example as a leader? So how many of those names showed that they had any semblance of the same level of preparation and standards that we have lauded Merrett for demonstrating? Merrett is a very good player and he has performed very well for the club as a player. I didn’t think he was the right call for the captain prior to him getting the cap and I was concerned about how it would go when he got it. But I think we have to accept that his selection as captain and his unsuitability for the role is the indication of how bad the dearth of leadership within the playing group has been. The club has invested in supporting players developing a leadership skill set and that has to be commended, but I think the lack of it is going to cost us in terms of bringing in expensive FA’s from other clubs leadership groups. And it’ll be either blokes who are too old to really contribute much more than helping the kids develop leadership skills (which also probably keeps kids on the list in some positions from getting games) or it’ll be guys that are probably on an untouchable list within other clubs because they’re highly skilled, valued and potentially future captain/VC of whatever club they’re at.
I took it that we only had one half decent player in our side during the MerRAT years. To back that up, we also have Peter Wright winning a Crichton in that era.
I noticed a couple of senior players had their best games for the club in a very long time, Also, the team didn’t quite play with the same vigor the following week in Zachs 250th.
Have Hawks actually made us an offer yet? There is so much opportunity in Merrett leaving but would love a good player as well as pick 8. Imagine we will have a captain that cares about making people better, who genuinely loves the club and wants success for the team not himself.
