#8 Marty Reppin' Gleeson - no more Marty Party

He's 6'1" ffs. His height is not an issue. Progress stalled massively this year. Hard to think of a more disappointing Essendon player in 2015.

Carlisle, Kav, Ambrose, Dalgleish, Bellchambers… I can think of a few…

Forward, never showed real potential, bizarre top-up player, injured…but, Dalgleish was more disappointing than Gleeson? Really?, injured.

gleeson wasnt that bad… youd be kidding yourself if you thought his body wouldnt prevent him from growing as a player though

I’m not one for stats, but if you look at them Gleeson improved his output across the board statistically in almost every area.

The others guys I mentioned can’t make that claim (ok so Dags probably shouldn’t have been included but he was invisible in the twos, you have to expect more from a listed player).

I can’t even.
How did you rate Sheridan’s season?
I’m not going to reel off a list of 21 year-olds (and younger) but ■■■■■■ hell…

The way people go on about Melksham and Jerrett…this kid played every game this season (I know, I can’t believe it either).
More than anyone on the Essendon list, Gleeson needs a massive 2016.

tom sheridan? the midfielder from freo who is 12 kgs heavier than gleeson? who plays in a top 4 team with mature hard bodies around him?

apples and oranges.

Gleesons played off hb kinda the wing, body is majorly exposed in one on one contests. He still runs and carries when he has the space, but only when he has the space, and i think his weight really got into his head. He ■■■■■ himself when people are closing in around him.

Youre making out like he was diabolical, but I just think he wasnt that bad. He wasnt great, but he wasnt gobsmackingly undeserving of his spot, he found the ball and generally used it decently. Not bad, but not great.

And i also think its a bit odd to say that he was disappointing, he played a good stretch of 5 or so games last season before getting injured… 5 or so games isnt enough to raise my hopes all that much… he played like he still thinks hes as old as his face will have you believe

I honestly didnt expect much of him this season, and despite what you think, there is no way that his body is letting him fulfil his potential

Mate…he played every game, three as sub and averaged seven kicks.
What do you think happens if he doesn’t improve on that next year?

tend to agree with you. he wasn’t great but wasn’t bad either. He did what was asked of him, in trying to take the game on, it didn’t work alot of the time, but hopefully he’ll be better for it next year and beyond.

the only worry i have about him is his kicking. Most of the time he’s decision making is top notch, but then massive fluffs the kick. You cut him some slack for being a second year player.
However if he’s still making those same skill errors in years 3 and 4 it’s not just youth that’s the issue, it’s an ingrained problem.

Wasn’t this year his 3rd year??

Marty was moved more and more into a midfield ( wing) rotation as the year went on. As such, he was having to learn how to play as a midfielder at AFL level. Give the kid a break and see how he develops next year.

then you can start to be as dramatic as you are now

Was very promising in 14’. Played daring footy.
Confidence dropped big time in 2015 because his main trick was not coming off. I think oppositions had him figured out that he always chooses to take on the first then dispose of the footy.
He’s young, he’ll work it work.

Interesting thing about learning your trade in the back line, your mistakes get noticed a lot more. I think he is very sure by foot 99% of the time, but as our season died and the flood gates open it becomes a lot harder to ‘take the game on’.

It was not an outstanding year but the fact that he played 22 games indicates he was doing enough right. He would want to make progress a bit faster but I’m a lot less worried about Gleeson than certain other Blitz love children (Shaun ‘2 touches’ Edwards for instance).

Got though the season playing every game. Big tick. And big love.

People expect that development is linear. And they saw the line on Gleeson as having a steep positive gradient, so they were expecting a gun this year. Instead they git a still developing thin kid.

Given the way the season went him playing every game was a good sign. With a number of mature bodies missing, and the team down on form it’s probably not surprising he didn’t perform as hoped, but he got another 22 games in, and at the start of next year will be 21 with 31 games under his belt. I reckon that’s a very good basis from which to take another step forward.
