You never tank, and you always play to win. The game is difficult enough as it is, without aiming for the # 1 draft pick.
Getting the number one draft pick is more important than eating food, it’s more important than drinking water.
Getting the number one draft pick is more important than an escape plan.
*parody of the mindset of people who think we should tank
This season is a wake.
Richmond making a play for the no1 pick
There have been some very good no 1. pick.
Weithering is an excellent player and you have to feel sorry for him to be at Carlscum.
I don’t believe in tanking, but we will be lucky to win many games. Today will tell.
With Jackets DODORO on board we don’t need a number 1 pick, he picks them from anywhere. Picking great players till the early morning…
Draft pick irrelevant fools gold. Select the team for development. Play to win.Really bad mind set to get into, being unconsciously, consciously, incompetent. Worked really well for Melbourne didn't it?
freo have the added benefit to finish bottom that they could get McCarthy for free.they will finish bottom
Fair enough given what they offered last year and were rejected. Player also should have no concern walking after indicating he wanted the trade done last year. They had their chance.
A i’m pretty sure he’s still under contract so can’t just walk.
B The “offer” was a draft pick in this years draft so what they offered wasn’t exactly in a rush or need to get. However with freo’s ■■■■■■ start to the season that pick may have ended up being inside the top 10 so with the benefit of hindsight you’d obviously take it.
I’m the opposite, Freo got what they deserved. They focussed on getting bennell and thought GWS would fold due to the “look” of not trading a kid back for “family reasons”.
they didn’t and GWS are flying while Freo’s era looks pretty much over.
The icing on the cake would be if Career coach lyon got the sack, cos he sure as hell knows what happens when the board decide the coaches time is up, they go a “headhunting”

pick 1 won’t be by choice. We’re ■■■■.
pick 1 won't be by choice. We're ■■■■.
Was just going to point out there’s one key factor in the assumption made by the op, that we have a choice in the matter.
If it’s any year we are going to get it, it’s gonna be this one,
There’s also a big difference between having a full list and choosing to lose, compared to having a gutted list and doing so.
Not saying we should tank or that.
but we aren’t going to have much of a say in the outcome, so best people get used to the idea cos the longer the season goes, the more likely the fact it is we are gonna finish bottom.
OH BABY COME AT ME PICK 1
It’s not going to bother me if we finish last. I’d prefer not to, but we all know it’s nothing to do with trying to lose etc… like Carlton and Melbourne of years gone by.
As long as the boys keep trying all season and we see some improvement in a few more of the youngsters and some improvement in the ball movement forward, then I’ll be happy.
But bring on 2017.
I don’t think any supporter wants to tank or thinks that the team is doing that but we need to be realists. We are really going to struggle to win games this year with the cattle we have. The effort for the most part seems to be there. Pick 1 is going to most likely end up with us so whilst we haven’t got much to be happy about in terms of wins surely we can be happy about getting pick 1 and having first dibs this year. I for one have been pretty happy with most games and have taken small positives each week.
at the moment I would trade any draft pick for a proven goal kicker! I hope this passes as the season progresses
OH BABY COME AT ME PICK 1
and with the #1 pick essendon select…

The thing is if we don’t get pick 1 we get pick 2 or definitely pick 3. It’s not like we’re in 2011 and going well and someone’s offering us pick 1 at random. We will get a pick of great value anyway. I’d MUCH rather win 3-4 games this year and not finish bottom. Because it means we’ve probably played some good footy, developed the kids, boosted morale and shows that we can hit the ground running when we slap 9 or 10 of the 12 players straight back in the side. It’s a way better outcome than just getting a pick one higher who could easily be overhyped, overrated, and the “consensus” #1 pick. Who knows what any draftee could be? I’d rather the points in the bank in terms of putting good lessons and development into the kids who we DO have and who we KNOW can be something like Orazio, Zach, Darcy and hopefully by the end of the year Francis, maybe Morgan/Redman/Eades instead of praying for a kid like Ainsworth who at 17 years old is just a pipe dream. And stay spoon free since '33
So would it be right to say we get 1 and 19 ( and maybe 37?) in a draft with great depth?
Just had a look at the below. I think Drew Banfield and Luke Hodge are the only #1 picks to have won a flag.Additionally, West Coast are the only team to win a flag within five years of having a #1 pick.
For mine, teaching our kids of the future how to compete all day every day and that you always, always play to win will get us to a flag well before a #1 pick will.

Des Headland for the Lions too (sorry to nitpick!).
Completely concur with the 1st post too.

Exactly what I was getting at.
