I don’t mind it to be honest. Keeps more clubs in it for longer. If it was ESS vs FC in an 8th vs 9th playoff you are getting 90,000 at the MCG and that has to be a good thing.

That’s not actually correct, Carlton missed the finals last year with a 12-10 record. At worst it would be a 50.50 win/loss record i think.
Nobody wants this. The finals system we have now is perfect. 7th & 8th are just making up the numbers anyway. We don’t need worse teams in the finals.

Exactly this, if you’re not good enough to be in the top 8 after 24 rounds, you shouldn’t get another chance. Unfortunately, media parasites like Hutchy and Eddie will push and push for it and eventually will get their way. If it was up to them, footy would be like the ■■■■■■■ big bash league
I don’t think a Wildcard type weekend is a completely bad idea, just make it for something other than a spot in that years finals.
Give the winners of games 4 premiership points for the following season or something.

Might happen occasionally then, i wonder if it’s more unlikely with an extra round now. Anyhow those teams aren’t making the finals anyway, they are playing off to make the final 8. I think that is the way to think of it, a wildcard weekend isn’t finals.
Play state of origin with non finals teams players in weekend bye pre finals
Albeit it cheapens the notion of if with many of best players not in frame

Give winners a priority pick they can either use or trade. It lightly removes incentives for finishing last.
I’d prefer an all in brawl type game of footy between 17 & 18, or 18 & 19 (when ever that’ll be) for the number 1 draft pick. The team with most players left standing wins that pick.
And ‘Gather Round’ was straight stolen from NRL.
Just like they stole SOO from us. Much easier for them though with 2 potential contenders rather than 4 (or more).
