Victory supporters are not the yard stick to base normal behaviour on.
Josh plays for Adelaide United so plenty of hatred between the two sides but the behaviour of the Victory fans was on another level
I went to school with a current high profile footballer, and know for a fact he is gay. The media would be a much bigger problem than any fans. Fans don’t care.
I wouldn’t want my entire career to be defined by who I have sex with.
If I was ■■■■■■■■ Jennifer Hawkins I’d be more than happy for my career to be defined by that
Shout out to Shaun Hampson.
Bit like society as whole, no one cares, the only people that make an issue out of this, is large organisations, government and some squeaky wheels which stors up the media. We dont need posters, TV ads, shouting from rooftops, we are accepting of all these days so save the blu tac and concentrate on getting the footy right. I understand difficult for first player to raise hand, but really, no need to make a circus of it, but unfortunately will happen so probably why no one wants to be first.
End of day, no ones business so really no need for anyone to raise hand. Maybe they all should raise hand at once, show how much of a non story it really is
well, there facts are there. proportionally there’s less gay men in sport then there are in the general population.
it’s the why that gets specious
Would be a good excuse to get rid of some utterly horrendous mouth breathers from the media.
Normally takes one good sturdy HR complaint to make upper management pretty keen to look at a few efficiency measures and re-organisations.
Gay kids who could do with role models like their mates have - and parents of said kids.
Representation does help.
It’s extremely weird that (male) footy has such an acceptance of ingrained homophobia, and it probably doesn’t reflect well on those of us on the hetero side of the fence. I say probably -
I mean definitely.
The women’s professional game had their first out player about 4 seconds after it started.

Too bad that Four fkg Corners couldn’t see to do a revalationary report about the biggest injustice in Australian sports history, instead of doing what is essentially a PC story here. Most people [at least most normal people] do not make any judgements about gay people these days, so why the beat-up here?
Ie “…as long as they conduct themselves like white men”

“normally”
Is this only at the highest level though?
We have had openly gay footballers at local levels when I was playing and we have had a few at clubs I’ve been involved in and they have always been treated well and accepted. I think there has even been a few at SANFL level.
Obviously at the lower levels there isn’t the media to make a big fuss about it.
I think most players and fans at AFL level would be fine
As far as I know, yep.
I absolutely don’t buy that gay dudes, for some reason (?) that bg seems to understand but I don’t, apparently don’t want to play this one particular contact sport to the highest level (but don’t have issues in league or gridiron or rugby or soccer or state/local level footy)?
And nor should anyone with two brain cells to rub together.

NRL has had one player come out as openly gay (Ian Roberts).
NBA has had one player come out as openly gay (Jason Collins).
NFL has had one player come out as openly gay (Carl Nassib).
I’m sure someone will come out one day. Every knows there are probably a couple of gay players, and nobody cares.
You’re misrepresenting me a bit there. I used the word “propensity”, I didn’t necessarily say they didn’t want to play. One could argue homophobia, but even without that, do you really think that many footballers at afl level are gay?
In terms of my own personal experience, I did a job for years which attracts a high number of lesbians. I don’t have the stats, but I’d say it’s a much higher percentage than society over all. Why that is, I’m really unsure, perhaps they are more inclined to do certain jobs, activities than other demographics in society. There is probably something else going on here in terms of tendencies, though that is something that I have absolutely no idea about. I’m sure someone has done some analysis somewhere.

Totally agree with this comment, but just like the occasional racist who abuse players the minority would be a problem. Not sure what society in general can do about the minority when main steam media and social media in particular, allows such people to have a usually anonymous, louder voice than they deserve.
I think some players don’t come out is because they don’t want to become a mouth piece for the cause. They just want live their life how they choose, they don’t need public attention or adulation to support their causes.
