AFL - Terrible Ideas, Too Many Ideas, No Idea…

The chances of the AFL doing that are about the same as Jobe Watson getting an apology from the AFL and his Brownlow back.

Zero. As much as I’d like to see both happen.

Yes. Sponsorship deals are also restricted . In addition there is a ban on every professional footballer betting on any game anywhere in the world.

Yes, as a member I’m aware of that but it’s also very hypocritical of the FA and a bit of a Clayton’s ban when the ban on Gambling sponsorship of clubs doesn’t kick until 2026/27 season so clubs can have sponsorship deals and be on the front of club strips for the next 2 seasons still

Doesn’t every sporting body have gambling advertising? It’s too much of a risk to lose that income when everybody else is doing it, it needs to be legislated by government.

It never will though because political parties make money off it. The nrl basically runs most of its clubs off poker machine money and the nsw labor government won’t legislate it out, because pokies fund their election campaigns. I was reading about it about a month back. It’s why i really rate what malinaskus is doing in s.a by banning political donations.

Australia is turning like the u.s with politicians having to make decisions based off ‘returning favours’ to certain bodies that fund their campaigns.

Politicians ALWAYS make decisions for their own self interest which typically has a 3 or 4 year horizon.
Everything and everyone else can GAGF.

Yes but it would significantly decrease if they weren’t reliant upon donations and therefore make policy decisions to keep their donars happy. In Australia you’ve got the gambling lobby, unions, banks, mining, with way too much influence now.

Malinaskus made an interesting point the other day, they found that 80 percent of u.s politicians time is now spent on fundraising for their upcoming election campaigns. Instead of serving their constituency.

Gambling is a cancer upon society, and the promotion of it is immoral.

Let me book it in, book e, bookie…

One moment.

Not exactly true.

Governments make zillions from gambling. No Government is going to ban it as they would lose office quickly, but they will ban all advertising within a few years.

What’s not exactly true? Labor have made around $100 million of pokies revenue through their venues over the past few years, that’s not including the cfmeu owned venues, that then fund the parties election campaigns.

As I said, not exactly true.

ALP owns none in Victoria. Essendon FC own more.

I don’t think you read my above point, i was talking about why nsw won’t ban pokies and why federally they won’t push it either. Because the party own venues themselves that are raking in the millions, plus they heavily tax other pokies venues, plus get their political campaigns donated to by the cfmeu, who own and rake in millions off of pokies venues too.

What’s the revenue from something like the Labor Club in the ACT (the big barn, like the NSW clubs) as compared to donations from the Unions?
One big difference between the ALP and the LNP is the well funded research institutes that it can draw on to gauge what will work with the voter,

I read an article on this about a month back, i remember over a couple of years each of those venues individually made 50 mill in profits, so it was around the 100 million mark combined. I also heard on the radio the other day that the cfmeu donated 4.5 million to the Victorian labor party for the last election campaign. You would think that money filters down from their pokies venues profits too. As you can see, government is too tightly wound into the fabric of pokies money to wanna do much about it, as it could weaken their own party.

This belongs more in the politics thread, but don’t leave out the bits on Palmer, Pratt and Gina’s financial contributions, the internal struggle within the Vic LP over control of the Cormack Foundation treasure chest.
Palmer’s funding didn’t go directly to the LNP but as the great disrupter, it got the LNP over the line .

I mentioned about political donations further up, but we’re talking here about gill’s morals in taking a gig at tabcorp and profiteering off of gambling. I’m saying it has to be legislated, but the reason it’s not legislated is because of the huge amounts of profits and donations those in power are currently receiving from poker machines. Cut off political donations like they are doing in s.a and politicians won’t be compromised as much and will actually do what’s best for the community and not themselves.

I’m all for screwing over Carlton with the father-son picks.

But can the AFL stop lumping father-son with northern academy.

They aren’t the same thing.

There needs to be a rule in play that Northern clubs can only access one player in the first round from their academy.

It should not be the case with father-sons, as most clubs will get a father-son rated in the first round (maybe) every 10+ years.

Ahh, I see we’re talking about the drafting of the offspring of former Essendon great, Scott Camporeale.

Mark diStefano has been running articles on Gil in the AFR , behind paywall. The most recent one is headed ‘All in the Family’.
Seems Gil has also been hired as an adviser to Blackstones, a US private equity firm which owns Crown Resorts.
