“The AFL finals will proceed for the first time without a single player covered for concussion injuries following changes to their default protection that ended insurance coverage for head knocks.
The AFL Players Association has confirmed that no insurance company has offered to provide coverage for concussion under the footballers’ superannuation plan since financial services titan Zurich declared head trauma injuries were uninsurable earlier this year. The cover expired on July 1.
This has left more than 500 players unable to make claims if they develop permanent brain injuries such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which can develop into dementia, as result of suffering an on-field concussion.”
This is very bad news for the AFL & Football generally. A substantial legal challenge here might have far reaching consequences.
That can’t be quite right, he was on Hawthorn’s list until 2020 (unless it was before he played AFL, in which “pre covid” would be technically correct but not particularly helpful)
