AFLW - Elimination Final vs Cats, GMHBA 1.05pm Sun 12 Nov 2023

We got a couple of cheapies

I just wanted to not get thrashed in the first quarter. Apparently too much to ask.

Our season was essentially over before half time.

Because people start to think that we are better than we are. We were clearly outplayed by Geelong and are still a mile off the top 4 teams. The last thing we want is revisionist history going, ā€œOh, we were so close, we nearly won thatā€, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Anyone making decisions would have seen the game though.

And uncle Colin hunter is back on our TV’s. Geez didn’t this bloke get enough airtime doing the AFL men’s season. The bloke even scored a seat to the Brownlow

Agreed, but that has never stopped this team making ā€œpopularā€ decisions, regardless of the wrong or the right of it.

The AFLW team?

Sorry, should have said club.

Now time to sweat through the delisting period. :disappointed:

the coaches have a lot of work to do to stop us fighting on the ropes after the first quarters.

Felt it was bad situational awareness. Was sprinting to take advantage of that 50, and instead of an attempted short pass, should have loaded up and gone for the goal square.

Lost it in first 10 minutes but then battled hard. Well – next year!!!

Our clubs ability to put up scoreless quarters in finals is remarkable.

Got the Dees V Norf on right now and there is marked step up in skill levels. The handling of the ball is so much cleaner in this game, lack of fumbling.

Heck of a second season for the club anyway. As long as there’s continued progress I’m happy. The game is too short to allow these first quarter fades.

It was a good reply from us in the last quarter but too late.

Think the changes at half time and three quarter time summed up our deficiencies player wise.

Wales went to play defender after centre bounce. We put speed on the wings and we put Toogood kn on the ball.

Get these players and we can keep our best players where we want / need them.

I think the list build has been great.
But women’s footy has evolved a bit over the last few seasons. It’s not just about win the midfield contest and win the game. The better teams are capable of hurting the opposition on the spread just as much as midfield contested footy.

I don’t know what it is about our start to games, but we’ve followed the same pattern all year. I don’t think we’re doing anything drastically different than other teams.

If you look at the teams that have won premierships or finished runner up, they are all from the first 2017 season of footy. It shows that you need pre-season upon pre-season to get your fitness up to speed as well as have a gameplan that the players can actually do.

30 list spots and likely have one of them out due to pregnancy means your list build is very constrained and your depth can be tested very quickly.
I think we play too many talls in the backline. We don’t have enough run out of the backline. Our wings are great distance runners but Radford and Matilda as a duo was the best we could do given Georgia Gee was injured. She did come back, but I don’t recall her lining up on the wing since her return from injury.
Our midfield is good, but it’s very inside contest based. Nanscawen is great, but her kicking lets her down. She’s an inside mid and a damned good tagger and tackler. Her and Maddy hold the midfield together. We badly need a player who can break away from the pack with speed.
Our forwards are good. Paige and Clarke will be given a chance to step up in this area over the next few years.

I feel this season, we had to try a lot without really knowing how it’ll result. Mia van Dyke was trialled all over the place. Backline, off a wing and forward line and she couldn’t find that perfect position that suited her. Matilda is supposed to be a backup ruck, but she’s playing off a wing. Kodi does her best work in the backline, but she was shuffled around to try and get a different mix a few times.

For me, the one that really stepped up this season was Mia Busch. Didn’t miss a game and played with real aggression. Steph Wales looks like she’ll be comfortable as our ruck for another few seasons. Nanscawen has been far better than expected. We have some good pieces. We just need to add to what we have and get some more unity within the team.

Our skills are good. But under pressure, we’re flawed. That’ll be worked on as we play in more pressured games. Training is great, but the intensity doesn’t allow you to hone your skills under pressure.
