No. Almost on a living wage now.
I need a pathway to learn all this. Give me ten years…
That was my first game too and I honestly think having 18 teams is a double edged sword. It’s great for every afl team to have representation but the talent pool is clearly not there. I’d probably say the same for AFL so for W the problem is exacerbated significantly.
There were plenty of players running around out there who are meme level bad. I’m talking ball drop, handpass technique, marking technique, ball handling, physical conditioning etc. Some dire stuff.
But on the flipside, there are clearly a few players at the top end with sound fundamentals. I saw a few crisp passes, some decent clunks and clean hands. These players were honestly better than I expected. On top of that all skill levels seems to crack in hard.
Obviously 1 game isn’t sufficient to judge properly, but it does seem like the top end right now is adequate. It’ll take time for the standard of the bottom end to be raised (longer with so many teams) but it will increase
I must have been watching a different game.
And knickerbockers!! (Maybe)
Which part do you disagree with?
I’m gonna be condescending here. You wear the time it takes for it to be up to lofty standards par because it’s about more than the players now. It’s about providing a competition that 50% of the population can now dream to be included. If it takes 15 years so be it. The population is there just need the time
The total number of girl/woman players is rising faster than the number of AFLW teams is. So it’s not going to take that long.
I assume that is partially why there are 16 a side. Personally I thought that was great. It was wide open attack all night.
16 is mostly a congestion thing (fewer big kicks).
16+5 on the bench (with no cap on rotations) vs 18+4 has moreso been a weather thing.
Why not both?
I was wondering how they would go on what for them is essentially a larger ground, since they obviously don’t kick quite as far. Still 18 scoring shots is a great return (especially since they play 20 fewer minutes).
I was obviously at the wrong end to appreciate it at the time, but Radford did pretty well in her first (EFC?) game as a defender.
Tulla #1 oval is MCG-size, so bigger than Docklands.
AFLW games run around 70 minutes, so call it 50 minutes shorter than AFL and therefore the equivalent of 31 scores.
VFLW runs 80 minutes.
I realise this and don’t disagree. I just think there should be less teams.
Teams like Norf shouldn’t even have an AFL team let alone a W.
EDIT: Less teams and more rounds/games.
Our girls looked every bit as good as Coll, Adel and Melb did in the games I’ve watched, very exciting!
Was it 15+ stoppages? Felt like the quarters were going about 18-19 minutes.
The women’s game will be different. Different strategies, tactics, fitness, structures etc…
To me if you think of it somewhat more like union and league. Both rugby but not the same. Long term the womens game may end up having more tactic similarities to international rules footy.
I got no complaints!
