I actually completely agree with this.

My thinking is that the following are red flags:

  • No experience of success as a player
  • Lack of diverse club experience (i.e. one club player/one club coach). Bonus anti-points for that club being EFC.
  • No reputation as a leader
  • First time coach
  • Saga player (question mark on quid pro quos/”debt” to the player).

Many coaches will have one or two of those. Hurley has almost all (I didn’t recall him ever being in the leadership group but a quick Google said he was in there in two separate stints) and Stanton has all but one (he coached at Carlton prior to us).

More than happy to accept I’ve got no idea from afar but all you can go off indicators and they are the indicators as I see it.

Um, what? Outside of Setterfield who should be delisted, only Bryan, Edwards, Hayes and Martin aren’t expected to be back by round 1. And three of those are meant to be available “early rounds”. Two of those may not be best 22. Not great, but not a disaster for the season.

You forgot Cox. 5 players, or 6 if Setterfield remains, not available for round 1. That IS a lot. And that is still 5 months away. It WILL be more than that. And then you can add on top of that a bunch with question marks coming in to the start of pre-season.

You underestimate the compounding effects of training or lack thereof, and it’s effects on future injury risk. It is profound and there’s tonnes of evidence that support it.

You hear that they are ready for round 1 or 3 or 4 or whatever and you think they are “ready”. They are not. It is not the same, as a player who has completed a full preseason and is ready to go round 1. It is not even the same ball park. And when you start a season this way, the season will go downhill from there. It always does.

I never said it was a disaster for the season. But I did say we won’t have a good injury list next year. And you can take that to to the bank.

How foolish of us.

Us?
I don’t remember speaking to you.

Apologies. When you said you, I thought you really meant “you”.

I did. And I was talking to Ant. Very ambiguous I know.

Is it because our club is so badly run and a complete shambles and will never be the same so Gia has done the only thing he could and saved himself; and why Merrett wants to leave too?
