You would hope that with the early departures, someone in the hierarchy has a well developed secret plan to poach some quality assistants from finals sides!
This was my initial thought also but it’s an opportunity to work in a development role at an AFL club. Surely you can get someone, be it development coaches at state or pathway level or ex AFL players, to be involved at teaching first four year players craft in their positions.
you probably could find bodies to fill those roles, but those people are likely going to be the least qualified and require the most oversight - probably not who you want at the most crucial point of a 1-3 year player’s development
anyone that is sufficiently qualified to do the role is not going to leave their current gig for a couple of months at an AFL team with no promise of employment past Oct
There’s a date coming up when assistants are advised of their contract status, pretty sure that’s mandatory across the league. Stants has a contract in front of him, not sure if he signs, might depend on the coach. Doesn’t come across as the greatest media performer but I think he’s highly rated internally. If you watch training it’s not unusual for Stants to take the session. He’s kinda been the whipping boy for a while but he’s at least stepped up when others have fallen…ditto Hurls
I think that’s setting the bar a bit high. Most development coaches are recently retired AFL players with no other experience or alternatively those from lower levels who have earned their stripes and would love an opportunity within an AFL environment. And why not offer them something beyond October?
The alternative is that their coach in that “crucial phase” is spending most of their time focusing on coaching the senior defence.

I reckon nearly everyone who is involved at a state league level would jump at the opportunity to be involved in an AFL system, even if it is only for a few months. It’s a huge chance to get a foot in the door and looks fantastic on a CV. The money would also be significantly better at AFL than VFL (not sure about WAFL/SANFL).
It would suck for the state league clubs.
that backs up what Davis said about Essendon maybe having some people they want as assistants as well.
Same with Troy Chaplin at melbourne was the forwards coach at one stage
We will only attract two types of assistant coaches, ones looking for their first gigs or those looking for a pay day.

Imagine we went with Hird, Spike, Voss, Bartel, McCartney, Daly, and Pendles and Neal on big player coach contracts for 1-2 years.
Wont surprise me at all if we offer absolutely massive money to some like Neale to come and help us on field with leadership
