And its no surprise hes been past over for top jobs of late.
He took a very capable outfit that could have had a little mag-ynasty and got them progressively worse once they knifed Malthouse. He ■■■■■■ off the rat pack (verified by a very entertaining Dane Swanat the Launceston tramsheds) by implementing standards that just didn’t suit certain players. Man U knew it if they let Cantona wear sneakers with his team suit. McDonald knew it if they let Travis Head pick when he wanted a net.
Good coaches know you tailor for individual needs (within reason) and Buckley has always struck me as someone who leaves little margin for personality. Mostly as he lacks one but also as he has little time or empathy for the battlers, the jobbers, the stoppers that some teams need. Yes they’re hard to watch but are usually part of the fabric that holds teams together. Perfect as an assistant, suicide as a senior.
It’s been theorised* Eddie put the club on notice in 2018 and they overperformed that season.
There have been a few coaches that have sailed along in the coat tails of their club. Robert Walls at Carlton comes to mind. And Kickittome Bucks is another.

You make a few strange posts. Buckley was a figjam but he has changed his whole persona from 2018 onwards. He is calm, measured and humble and a great thinker in the game. I remember I use to watch I’m a celebrity back in the day and he was absolutely loved in the camp by everybody, but his regular stints on Sen and on the couch show how good of a footy mind he has and how his persona has done a 180 from his early playing and coaching days.
