Australian Policies -- from October 2024

Not our experience the last few times we have been in NZ. Very similar to Australian prices.

OTOH, Singapore is very expensive. I avoid it at all costs. (sic)

No worries. Reading between the lines if Nuclear was a serious option for us the biggest barrier could be trusting Russian and Chinese technology.(for the type of plants that would suit Oz)

So that, starting from scratch and the cost imho presents the biggest barriers.

I don’t think it’s the smartest option for Australia. But that’s good reading and totally understandable why it’s suitable elsewhere.

It would be worth investigating removing barriers to nuclear energy here. But I don’t like the taxpayer paying hundred of billions for it.

Which has never been in question, but it is a handy thing for those pretending that they believe it’s the best option here to point to. ā€œIf it’s so hard why does France have nuclear powered McDonalds?ā€

The other underdiscussed issue is water. Nuclear plants are incredibly thirsty. That water has got to come from somewhere.

Nuclear power plants are still in the Steam Age. While they can talk about new nuclear technology, it still creates steam to run a turbine to create electricity. Not only inefficient with numerous processes but as you said needs lots of water for the steamer and for cooling the nuclear fusion, though less than ever before in the newer plants.

Using wind or solar to create electricity has less steps and is more efficient. Does have limitations if no sun or wind, but that is why our Lord Elon gave us batteries.

I have nothing at all against nuclear power, but it is old technology and we need to move on. If they perfected the Warp Drive, it would make sense.

She’s so well qualified for such a role. If that’s the best they can come up with, good grief!

Who is the Vic Shadow Treasurer?

I have retyped and summarised, to the best of my ability, a small verbal extract of Simon Holmes a Court (SHAC) submission to the Select Committee Nuclear Energy a fews days ago.

SHAC:

  • An experts submission to the Committee submitted they could build 7 nuclear reactors before 2037. This is nonsense. My submission includes a Gant chart suggesting a very optimistic prediction is 2044 for the delivery of 1 nuclear reactor.
  • The experts submission includes the assumptions that are no delays in environmental, local or legislative approvals.
  • The Commonwealth Government has a terrible record of delivering major infrastructure on time and in budget.
  • Average nuclear power plant construction cost overruns are in the range of 120%

The Select Committee asked SHAC to clarify why such a difference in timing.

SHAC response on Experts ā€˜start of construction’ date:

  • SHAC clarified the constructions timeline. Experts state the build timeline is from the first concrete pour of the Reactor. In fact, it takes 4 years to prepare the site beforehand, like civil works, roads, supporting infrastructure etc. So, 3 years before the first pour, it is a massive constructions site which has already absorbed 1/4 of the cost of the build.

SHAC response on the Experts ā€˜end of construction’ date:

  • Experts mark the end of construction when the reactor is connected to the grid, not when it starts generating power. In the UAE, it took 8 years for their first reactor become critical (I guess, powered up, not sure of the meaning here?), then another 12 months before it started transmitting power.

What actually is your gripe here?

Um, she is going to be a Labor treasurer. Unqualified LNP treasurers are the duck’s nuts. Look at Angus (although he is only shadow treasurer).

Victoria needs a passionate Qld’er with a firm grasp of trickle down, a genuine feel for what ā€˜the people’ are thinking, a common touch, a deep engagement with the housing price issue, and enough folksy self effacement to regularly admit he’s too dumb to engage in political discourse.

Come on down!

That’s politician SOP.

Wow Davo, you are bitter and twisted today. Is it cloudy on the Gold Coast today ?

Do you really think that in order to be a Federal or State Treasurer that you need qualifications in finance, accounting, economics or some other related discipline ?

I would suggest that the best Treasurers have been sharp thinkers and tough politicians. A bit like Paul Keating or Tim Pallas.

Should Victoria reinstate the Australia Day parade?

Don’t need a parade for anything, it’s not the 1950’s

I was alway too busy camping, did we actually have an Aust day parade?

Pretty much. They can ditch the Melbourne Cup and Grand Final ones while they are at it, too.
