Australian Policies -- from October 2024

Possibly another own goal for the Libs in Victorian politics.
If Pesutto can’t pay back the huge loans for his costs in the Deeming defamation case, he could be forced into bankruptcy. He couldn’t sit as an undischarged bankrupt, a by- election
would need to be called.
The backlash from moderate Lib voters could affect election results in the Fed marginal seats here.

Always weird to be reminded that the ALP is safe(r) in Victoria because the LNP here is waaaaaay more scary right-wing minority hating than you remembered.

I actually don’t think either are poor. They are both measured and “nice”.

It is like your footy captain, who do you prefer, someone very hard at it like Terry Daniher or a quiet gentleman like Ken Fraser. Both many years ago, but both won flags.

I think we overrate PM and Opposition Leader positions. We don’t elect them, their comrades do and maybe that it why we get what we do.

Does anything in debates even slightly matter in Australian politics?

Mandatory voting means the primary benefits of debates in the US (encouraging participation in elections) are irrelevant here. Maybe some undecided but politically engaged people could be influenced, but I’d guess thats not any huge numbers.

Because if you’re working class, Labor gives us all the good stuff like Medicare and superannuation and the Libs try to remove it or water it down
Dutton started off going full MAGA, sacking public servants and stopping WFH, even though he says he’s changed his mind about that, how do you know he’s not lying and will do that if he’s elected.
No reasonable person wants a US style billionaire oligarchy, and here he is holding hands with big Gina.

The amount of unengaged and undecided voters who watched last nights debate would be near zero.

Before TV the MSM was about the only influencer in determining the election results with the 20% swing voters.
Social media and its access to anyone with the internet , have reduced the MSM to a rump, possibly reducing its influence to the older voter who follows politics in the MSM.
It explains why the ALP has engaged an influencer as part of its election campaign. The journalists employed by the MSM to report on the elections don’t count for much now.
However social media users are quick to quote Sky News, what this leader or that leader said, and the like if it fits their narrative. It’s also being harvested by planted trolls.

Should have the Punters politics guy ask off the cuff questions to both Liberal and labor leaders that would be an interesting watch.

That was a classic.

I think it was Howard (Vs Rudd?) the work would go negative before he even started to answer the question! Then they put his photo through the shredder when he lost his seat. Brutal ending for him.

He lost? The LNP says:

What a winner. He claimed that the reason there was no bulk billing now was all Labor’s fault. Never mind whenever the Libs have been in over the last 50 years they have done their best to either abolish or downgrade the system.

Albo pulled him up on that, pointing out when Dutton was Health Minister how much damage he did to Medicare. Dutton’s response was straight out of the Scummo manual: “That is factually incorrect” then moved on to some other crap.

Not sorry I missed the Albanese/Dutton mass-debate!

The Emperor’s clothes are getting more threadbare every day. He can’t afford new ones after the tariff hikes. He will have to go opshopping or dumpster diving to get clothes that others reject or army disposal stores.
He may not be able to wear a suit for much longer,

Labor’s dirt unit has been pretty successful in turning up material. Targeting the fringe idiots in the LNP who have ample dirt, but it’s tarring the whole party.

Pauline’s free ads on ABC present her as resilient and empathetic to those wrongfully convicted, like herself.
