The Malaysian solution had its merits. With Australian funding, UNHCR would have run the refugee camps to its standards and engage in orderly processing of refugee status claims. That would have lessened the assertions of queue jumping. Also, there is much more government capacity to reduce people smuggling from Malaysia than from the Indonesian archipeligo where central government powers are more limited.
It would also have assisted in stemming the flow of Muslim refugees ( who had right of entry into Malaysia) who were using Malaysia as a transit route to Indonesia. The UNHCR stood ready to cooperate in the proposed program. It is a damned sight better than what we have now.
After the Christmas Island drownings , Bowen was devastated. He did what he could by increasing the refugee quota, mostly by stopping the rorts of gaining residency through study courses at education institutes (many of them dodgy).
But then Rudd succumbed to the dog whistling, which demonised refugees who came by boat.
Time for the ALP to get back to a humane refugee policy.

Scott Morrison open to following Donald Trump in moving Israel embassy to Jerusalem

By political reporters Ellen Coulter and Dan Conifer

16 Oct 2018, 7:24am

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has indicated he is open to moving Australia’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Key points:

  • Scott Morrison said he was open to the idea of moving the embassy after talking to the Liberal Party’s Wentworth candidate
  • Nearly 13 per cent of voters in Wentworth are Jewish
  • The Government needs to win the seat to retain its one-seat majority in the Lower House

The move would follow the United States, which reversed decades of foreign policy by opening an embassy in Jerusalem this year.

The US decision infuriated Palestinians and other Middle Eastern nations because the Palestinians want to one day establish their own capital in Jerusalem.

Mr Morrison’s announcement followed talks with the Liberal Party’s candidate for this weekend’s Wentworth by-election, former ambassador to Israel Dave Sharma.

Nearly 13 per cent of voters in Wentworth are Jewish, and the Government needs to win the seat to retain its one-seat majority in the Lower House.

In June, then-treasurer Mr Morrison said there was no sense that the Liberal Party would support moving the Australian embassy.

Mr Morrison’s consideration of a relocation is in contrast to the position of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, who said US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would not change Australia’s dealings in the area.

Former foreign minister Julie Bishop was also opposed to the idea, despite strong support for a move from within the party’s base.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to thank Mr Morrison for considering the move, tweeting that he had spoken with his Australian counterpart.

PM stays firm on two-state solution

Mr Morrison will reveal a foreign policy statement on Israel today, but is not changing the Government’s position on supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He is expected to announce a strengthening of security ties with Israel by placing defence attaches in each others’ embassies, and is also understood to be considering an inquiry into whether Australia should abandon support for the Iran nuclear deal, from which the US has withdrawn.

Mr Morrison’s announcement coincides with a decision to vote against a UN resolution to recognise the Palestinian Authority as the chair of the G77 group of nations next year.

The Prime Minister is understood to have been persuaded to consider the embassy relocation after discussions with Mr Sharma.

Mr Sharma has expressed support for an embassy move if it could be done within the context of the two-state solution Australia backs.

At the 2016 Census, Jewish people made up about 12.5 per cent of the population of Wentworth, a seat made vacant by Mr Turnbull’s resignation.

Labor has previously said the US embassy move to Jerusalem was not helpful to the peace process in the region.

Get this guy outta here

If this bloke is prepared to further destabilise an already volatile part of the world in exchange for a few votes then he is not fit for the office.

And apparently the vote to support Pauline’s ‘ok to be white’ was an admin error…

Well, I guess it’s better than blaming labor or the greens, or the narcs or the gays…

Oh, for just one ‘doesn’t give a crap how biased they look’ left-leaning daily tabloid.
Make it even in a city that doesn’t count.
Adelaide, or Brisbane or Perth.
Just one.

Funny how last night coalition MPs were bragging all over twitter about how strong a stand they took, and now today after everyone’s saying ‘wtf?’ all of a sudden it was an ‘admin error’.

"As a result of an administrative process failure, the government senators in the chamber ended up on advice voting in support of the motion," Senator Cormann said.

Translation: As a result of a miscalculation on this particular Dogwhistle, we have decided to lie through our back teeth yet again to the Australian Public, and blame the Dog.

The Dog will be shipped to Nauru to be locked up for Eternity forthwith, and never heard from again .

Now being blamed on Porter’s office staff. So, staffers in Ministers offices are directing elected representatives how to vote?
