PORT Adelaide Football Club will investigate claims an Adelaide Oval spectator racially abused Richmond player Bachar Houli during Sunday‘s elimination final victory over the Tigers.
Reports linked Houli — the AFL‘s first devout Muslim — as the victim of a taunt that labelled him a “terroristâ€.
A woman told Channel 7 that fans on the hill yelled to Houli: “Go back home you terrorist ... back to ISIS.â€
It was not confirmed on Tuesday night whether the taunt came from a Port Adelaide supporter or member.
“The Port Adelaide Football Club is aware of a spectator complaint from Sunday‘s first elimination final at the Adelaide Oval alleging Richmond player Bachar Houli was racially vilified by a fellow spectator,†the Power said in a statement.
“The club is still seeking more details but understands the police were informed about the matter at the time.â€
The taunt was reported by another fan to an anti-social behaviour hotline, promoted at every AFL venue.
The abuse claim is an unwanted distraction for the Power, which charged into a cut-throat semi-final against Fremantle at Patersons Stadium in Perth on Saturday night with a 57-point thrashing of the Tigers on Sunday.
