Agree. This is a wild animal. Getting too close to it on its own turf, is only going to make it that much wilder. Not the elephant's fault. The continued slaughter of elephants to fuel the illegal ivory threatens the species. Idiots getting too close in their car, is only asking for trouble.

From a report I read somewhere the elephant wasn't put down because of the car issue, it was badly injured from something that happened earlier and it could not be saved so they put it down to save it suffering. Not sure if true or not, just read it somewhere but not sure where now.

I’m actually shocked that tourists are allowed to drive themselves -seemingly in their own vehicle - around Kruger. I just assumed it would be a guided tour in a larger 4wd or truck.
And the elephant was definitely destroyed because Kruger cannot allow “inexplicable” behaviour, not because it was injured. which is bizarre reasoning , because Bull elephants are notoriously (almost predictably??) unpredictable, as countless hunters have discovered in their final seconds of life. So why let idiots put themselves in the wrong place, but then hold a wild animal accountable ? If this was a bull elephant terrorising a village in open country (as has happened), I’d support its culling. But this situation is like killing a Lion for mauling a human who has broken into its cage.
