Jeez, that camera angle does not really do that mark justice. That just looked sensational from the Windy Hill outer. The whole crowd erupted at that - Madden seemed to defy gravity for the second stage of that mark.

That is the same thought l had, when l saw him take that mark 35 years ago. Guys that big are not supposed to get up that high. He just went up, then he went up even higher in the second stage when he lifted off the shoulder, it was a remarkable, memorable effort. l have waxed on about this mark on here many times over the years. Geoff Raines won MOTY and in his acceptance speech he was gracious enough to say that SMadden's mark was better. (Conspiracy theorists will now point to this comment as yet more proof of official anti - Esseondon bias, but l am Joe King.)
