Has there ever been someone covering their own song this much…
In 1982, David Coverdale and the original version of Whitesnake recorded the following song on the album “Saints and Sinners”:
It didn’t dent the US charts
5 years later, with a completely different version of Whitesnake, (and a new hairstyle), Coverdale covered his own song for the eponymous “Whitesnake” album- with a different arrangement, and lead solo by Adrian Vandenberg.
He then re-recorded it the same year with yet another version of Whitesnake, different players, as a radio edit, with another arrangement. This version went to #1 in the US.
FWIW, I think the 87 Album version is the nazz, and the one i’ll always associate with the song in my mind.
trivia- note the change from “hobo” to “drifter” in the versions. The producers felt the yanks would mis-hear it…
