Obviously very much of its time, but Reagan and Brezhnev in a no-holds barred match for the title with the rest of the world cheering and making bets, all brought to you live by CNN…
Maybe a bit on the nose for some, but it’s my nomination.

Meh. I like old, cheap video clips—they’re fun

Portishead - The Rip

Definitely one of the craziest animations i have ever seen.

Beth Gibbons has such a wonderful voice.

Very Melbourney…

Deserves a mention, sort of the electronic version of Come Into My World video with some Gallagher thrown in

Yes!! I’m always reminded of Miss Selwood, my old Year 7 English teacher, when I hear that song! Great clip, too.

Video clips and the emergence of the early years of MTV had a massive, massive impact upon how film is edited these days. The impact on audiences meant shorter attention spans through an average edit going from around 5 seconds down to 2. A lot more rapid fire than post silent film era of the 1930’s.

Therefore I think this is the best video clip ever. Story goes that the Pixies unexpectedly had charted in the UK with it and needed a video for Top Of The Pops. All they had was about 20 seconds of the band members climbing over rocks in a quarry and had it stretched for the duration of the song. This flies completely in the face of the above and fits the song so well. I’ve heard people say they think is crap but I think it’s a happy accidental work of art. Can’t stop watching it.

On a similar theme, this is also 20 seconds of film. I like it a lot.

Spike Jonez killed it with this one, this is circa 94 I think? Pharcyde were huge back in the day. The video works with the sample.

^^^The avatar, one of hip hop’s most technical rappers, the enigmatic MF DOOM in a collaboration. Clever opticals in this 50/50 split screen.

Disclaimer: I’m getting pretty ■■■■■■ old.

So from my list, I suddenly realise that you don’t get much time to watch music vids once you leave your teens but growing up at the dawn of the music video was a fun ride.

The colour TV arrived at our house and sitting there as a 5 year old, I was blown away by Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sitting in front of the TV every Sunday night watching the latest rock vids on Countdown was classic - we’d get the Top 10 at the end of the show of which 10 to 2 were brief glimpses but then we’d get the full version of the No. 1 song. Skyhook’s Horror Movie was another fav.

This was great until ABBA turned up and hogged the number one spot weeks on end - ■■■■■■ Fernando.

Other’s I fondly recall were Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love / Simply Irresistible efforts.

Pink Floyd’s On The Turning Away, The Police Every Breath You Take, Bowie’s Ashes to Ashes and Prince’s Purple Rain were also good memories.

Now that was special. Neville Southall, Bruce Grobelaar, bubble permed mullets, Elton John’s Watford, Ricky Villa’s Cup final goal, years before English football went to complete ■■■■ and became full of rich, poseur ■■■■■…

…our reposte was this. I remember going nuts seeing this on Rage about 15 years ago. Wasn’t a huge fan of the band but it just works so well.

Can anyone tell me who that number 6 was at 1:50 chucking the ball at the opposition player? Cos I’m pretty sure that’s not Neale Daniher.

Probably Ken Roberts was #6
