I havenāt loved our efforts this season, but the last month (wce debacle aside) weāve won three games by āhanging in thereā despite extended periods of looking like ā ā ā ā - then running over the top in the 4th.
I doubt the rope a dope is intentional, but the defensive setups most certainly are.
Not only that, they stand out the back wanting it over the back, but are expecting players to be able to kick it 60 meters plus for it to happen.
On the flip side i did norice sydney did it alot too,
If youāre a big bodied forward and can constantly outmark your opponent i can understand it, to a degree, but when our small forwards are the biggest culprits, it leaves you scratching your head.
So glad we won. It is the 5th game this year my 5 year old has been to and the first time we won. He was going off in the last quarter and was booing Rampe as loud as anyone. He is following in his dadās footsteps. Got to teach em young.
I was really looking forward to today. A picture perfect day for a Saturday Arvo at the āG. Spring like weather, 1:45 start time, all set for an attractive game. What we sat through for those first 3 quarters was probably a worse game than the Pies v Hawks game last night. It was an atrocity. First quarter thought we had the better of the territory, but the final delivery into the forward line was pitiful to say the least. All the hallmarks of an Essington ā ā ā ā the bed when the season is on the line display. Sit it on the head of our small forwards, talls suck up the ground and then when we have the ball we have nothing to kick to. We sit it up in the air for Walla/Raz as if theyāre key forwards, and then when we actually have a tall to kick to, we kick it 2m in front of them on the bounce. Weād be better off kicking to space and allowing the smalls to run onto it.
I really would love to chat to Woosha and the coaches to try and understand what the ā ā ā ā is going on. My questions would be:
Why donāt we ever hold a tall forward back in the F50?
Why are Raz and Walla the only blokes who appear to be presenting at the ball?
Why arenāt our players able to fathom that kicking the ball high to a 5ā6ā crumbing forward isnāt a great idea?
The only time we look like we have half a system up there is when Hooker makes the inevitable switch to attack because we are basically at our last roll of the dice. Heās big, heās strong, he provides a focal point. No goals today but he does contest and at least has half a clue to hold back and present at the ball.
Once I calmed down, I realised that with our season on the line, and not playing that well, we won without our skipper, our best and fairest from last season, our best forward and our #1 ruck. We just had to get the W by hook or by crook and we did. Again, next week is no different, a must win to head to SA 9-7 and a virtual āfree hitā at the Crows. But we will have to play vastly better than we did today against a rejuvenated North. Time for a beer!
Not sure ānicelyā is the adverb Iād use. We are winning which is better than the alternative! We need to brush up on our ball use going inside fifty. We need to rethink our centre-bounce stategy, too. Zac Clarke was made to look very ordinary much too often today. Itās a pity our ruck stocks are so thin, but what choice do we have?
Perhaps our system is bad because our skills are so abysmal. Truly shocking⦠each game I watch shaves a year off my life I reckon. The fumbles, the missed kicks, the missed targets⦠ugh!
For large portions of the game, Sydney killed us with linkage play which was so much cleaner and precise than ours. We were often lucky their last kick inside 50 and their goalkicking was poorer than ours.
Be warned, the first 3 1/4ās by both teams was deplorable. You will be very frustrated. Last 1/4 though we turned it on and the skills went up a fair way.
Sydney were tough today. Owned us for 3Qtrs we did really well to stay with them especially in the 3rd. It made it look scrappy. Great work to open it up in the 4th and bring it home.
