Blitz Birders

Some of BH’s shots from our trip up and around Bendigo last week.
#Diamond Firetail - Mitiamo Cemetery - Absolute walk up start for next year’s calendar. Stunning looker!

#Tree Martin - Mt Terrick Terrick

#Rainbow Lorikeet - Flora Hill. Serious close up and only just above head height. Saw it at a distance and it didn’t move an inch as we approached and passed on a busy pathway. Can only assume it has been fooled by the “Spring” weather and is sitting on a nest. Saw Magpies seemingly swooping in Balnarring before we left so maybe. Weather is seriously ■■■■■■. Good pic though.

Spangled Drongo was back today. I haven’t seen him for a while….the last time there was a pair, but I guess mating season is over and he’s (she’s?) solo again.

Your Spangled Drongo post cheered up BH no end, and she needed it after spending the day in Frankston having elbow surgery. Let me explain the context. BH’s late and much loved dad used to refer to any unidentified bird as a “Spangled Drongo” and she and her 2 siblings assumed it was his made up generic term for any mystery bird. It wasn’t until much later when she became a fully fledged birder that she discovered with delight that it was an actual bird. She was totally stoked last year during our trip to Darwin when she saw one in feathers and flesh for the first time. Me, I’m a bit bit like BH’s dad, I reckon it’s the best bird name ever.

So lovely to hear that and hope she recovers quickly. So nice to have special memories of our loved ones. I had never seen or heard of one until we lived here 6 years ago. I was also amused at the name!
This drongo is a real character. He squawks/cheeps loudly when he arrives. I have fed him a tiny bit of mince many months ago, and today when he saw me he flew straight at me. He hovers about 20cm from your face …it’s quite amazing!! Fortunately I had a little mince in the fridge so I threw him some. (I know I shouldn’t but it’s the tiniest amount :grimacing:). We’re away for the next six weeks so that will be all the gets. Screenshot is from a video MrL&P took this morning - poor quality as it’s a screenshot from an iPhone video and he’s madly flapping his wings but you’ll get the idea.

Nice shot.

Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo ?.

Assume you are in Perth

Yes in Perth.

I think they are white tailed black cockatoos. Carnaby’s travel in bigger flocks and each bird is a bit smaller. But I am not a bird doctor
