Quite a few years later I gave Vander a lift home from the local nightclub. I was on my Pâs at the time, so he was either still playing or recently retired. He was absolutely piissed as a fart, dressed in his tradie finest (tanktop and footy shorts) and had clearly spent the evening in the attached public bar. He was trying to get into the nightclub and the bouncers âdidnât care who he wasâ and werenât having it.
He stumbled into my car, then fell out again at his place (he was too plastered to comment on why I knew where he lived) and left his packet of durries on the dashboard.
Who said you should never meet your heroes?..

Never had a duffle coat and never wanted one. Also, l have never had a player number on any jumper.
#6 - the one and only Neale Daniher
I went to Windy Hill years ago when Peter Bennett was playing. I was in a band and we played at a function at Pakenham that night. Peter Bennett was there and I zeroed in on him. He was a top guy and spent the night hanging around with my band. Your post brought back that memory
#23 Ken Fraser was the first number I had on a jumper but it was one of those white plastic squares with black numbers. I wanted something more authentic like the players wore - white numbers. So I unpicked the number and gave it to a school friend who barracked for Geelong (#23 Doug Wade). I asked my mother if she could sew on a white number for me but she insisted that she could only sew straight lines, so it had to be #1 or #11. I chose #11 John Birt.
Some time passed and we had a country footy clinic with some visiting VFL footballers and I was wearing my Essendon jumper. One of the drills involved the player handballing to you, you had to handball it back to them and then run around them whilst telling him your favourite player. I had a huge smile on my face as I handballed back and said âJohn Birtâ. He gave me a âgood boyâ and a cheeky grin.

Thatâs a cool memory! I think he was from down Pakenham way, and came to us via Hawthorn. Bit of a hard nut with a shock of blonde hair.
Yes, you are correct. I just looked him up and he was originally from Pakenham hence being at that function. He was covered in scratches and bruises after that game. A very friendly guy. Think he liked it that I recognised him.

I have a similar memory with Ron Andrews, it was after a cricket one day knockout comp at Doutta Stars in the early 80âs. Canât remember how but Ronnie ended up at my place (with others not all footballers) for end of day drinks. He lost his keys so I had to drive him home, knew where he lived was in the same street in East Keilor as cricket club president (where we had celebrated winning a premiership a few months earlier).
My first ever jumper that I got I put the #22 Billy Duckworth, former West Perth great.
My last ever jumper I bought was in 2016 and put the # 7 Zac Merrett after he emerged as a gun during that âtop upsâ year where he co-captained the side with Brendan Goddard and did it with aplomb.
#9 for Derek Kickett, which still fit me for Chè.
Loved them both.
