Hurley you ripper, BJ Goddard not bad either

Hurley was in full beast mode tonight. So happy right now. It's been such a stressful 7 months, and the last week has been terrible. Tonight has brought a smile to my face for the first time in a long time.

oh and major LOL's at carlton letting their fans bid on "chris judds car" . That is pathetic.

Why is that pathetic?
Cars that can carry 21 passengers for 4 years straight are a rarity, even if it is broken down now.

Zing!

Love it

Hurley was very good last night and played what was IMO his best game of the year. The forwardline with him, Crameri & Daniher (not a good game for Joe tonight) actually has structure and I believe could be the right combination.

BJ played his best game as a Bomber. Was everywhere, really important touches too such as forward entries. Really needs Nike to give him some boots with longer studs!

Watson was Watson. What do you expect from a Champion like him? Exactly what he gives each and every game! Boo him all you like, it doesn't seem to bother him. Actually, I think it motivates him and gets us (the fans) more vocal.

Hicking was great all night and was really strong in close. I believe he will have a little holiday unfortunately.

I thought Zaka looked out of sorts for most of the game as he has been the most of the second half of the season. But late in the game, he kept pushing to each contest. That goal wasn't just about him being in the right spot at the right time, he really lifted as the game went on. Hopefully last night will give him the confidence that he can still be a damaging footballer even if playing with an injury.

Paddy did well pretty much holding down the ruck all night. Took that massive mark and put away the goal like the reliable set shot he is. This side is much better with him in rather than out.

Baugley, he is a fit boy! Noticed in that final passage of play (that led to Zaka's goal) Howlett gave it to him because he had the run, streaming down the ground when so many players were spent! He might make the odd mistake here & there but his effort and determination is exactly what's what you want!

Last but not least, Hird. Not for a second have I ever doubted him or the football club. It's been a crazy week for all us sitting back and feeling helpless  as this great man has been unjustifiably smashed every which way by the media and the general public. As a result, we have all been fearing the worst. However, all those who have maintained the support, not just here on Blitz but at the training sessions, the games and with those #standbyhird posters, this is sureley keeping him sane and helping with performances like these.

Never have I felt so proud to be an Essendon fan and lucky to have a man like Hird who gives so much to a club that will ALWAYS give back to him!

Great club, great man, great supporters. Carn the mighty f**king Bombers!

I don't ever want malthouse to leave carltoon

Great win after the past month. How great is it to turn our form around against our old rival. Importantly, we needed the win to boost confidence for the finals*. Hurley  was great and I thought our forward line functioned quite well. I think people underestimate what Crameri brings to the side. Just imagine that forward line with Winderlich in it.

Watson again was just a pillar of strength and Goddard played the type of game we recruited him for.

Of course the Blues Kept us in the game with such poor kicking for goal.

I can't stand the media and commentators constantly referring to all those crap teams still with a chance to play finals from 9th. I am really thinking that the timing of everything and keeping that option in limbo is what the AFL are deliberately manipulating. I am sure they are using it to create more interest in other games this late in the season as teams have 'more' to play for. I think it Stinks.

Sorry, that wasn't match review.

Back on track...... I have been very doubtful on Pears this year, but I really believe he is building on form and played a pretty good game last night.

Hibbard has to be one of the best half backs in the league and if we can get his partner in crime back on the other side, and Heppel we will be building to a side that can do Damage in the finals*.

Hirds presser was very interesting and he was amazing given the circumstances. Full credit to him, I am so proud to have him in the Bomber Family. Whatever happens, I hope he is coaching long term.

* if we keep our points

Can’t sleep, can’t get the Adams family tune out my head.

We won because we tackled the best we tackled for a long, long time and won the tackle count 72-50 (note:  problem with Carlton: Gibbs 0 tackles, Murphy 2 tackles - both front runners).

Also:

- best forward structure for weeks & weeks.  Hurley outstanding at CHF, kicked the set shots he had to but provided an outstanding target at ~ 70m from goal then launched the ball deep inside F50.  He was so good they had keep Waite in defence all night.

- It wasn't that we won the I50 count, more so we want a lot deeper a lot more often than the Blues so our shots on goal from closer in and more directly in front of goal.  They seemed to have a lot of shallow I50s and wanted to shoot at as soon as they just entered F50.  not surprising they kicked so many behinds.

- Our run in the last - Zaka returned to some of his best form in Q4 and dominated the game (thought Goddard BoG, Jobe also very, very good). When he starts running & moving we look a different team.  Also thought that was Howlett's best game in a long time. He will start next week.

- KP defenders did well:  Hooker much better on Casboult this time, Carlisle, whilst not in the form he was in earlier this year,  kept Henderson well under control.

such a great game to end it for those navy blue flogs

Again, I take my notes on how the scoreboard result can influence perceptions on games.

I thought we were not far off very ordinary, and could and probably should have been blown out of the park. Had a few winners, but the fact remains we are a shadow our former selves, and rightly so with everything going on.

But, after being let back into the game by a very ordinary Carlton side, we showed great grit and determination to keep fighting.

Ummm....

(James Hird is forced to drive a Kia in what is a clear violation of his human rights)

James Hird could drive a busted up Ford Laser and make it look good

Where to start? Well it is nice to get back to talking about the footy again. We looked a little tentative at first, but once the Blooos started missing shots and we kicked a couple, l knew that we were up for the contest. Kudos to Kommer in the first. Agree with Baker that our forward line looked dangerous for a change. Hurley was damaging and a threat all night. His kicking and passes to advantage were excellent, in particular the pass to Crameri for our first goal. Down back we looked less composed with Menzel and Henderson threatening, but they kept missing shots on goal and on the balance of play they should have been about 4 - 5 goals up by quarter time. Their poor kicking for goal continued throughout the night, but bad kicking is as they say bad football.

l thought Hardingham had a fine game and Baguley was excellent throughout, Hooker was also solid. Watson with both his goals and Goddard with his fine shot led the way all night. Fanbloodytastic stuff.

Marginally.

That win was all heart.

The game never reached any great heights because both teams were very average in terms of skills and decision making.

However we still weren't spreading well, there were a truckload of poor kicks and although we made the choice to give the first option every time it got us into trouble and a better team than the blues would have made us pay.

And that is why this was such a great win. We had nothing going for us except our determination and grit and heart.

They can say and write whatever they like but no team has shown as much heart as Essendon has on the field this year.

Not a single one.

NB: Heath, if you're going to hit someone and cop 4 weeks, make sure they stay hit.

One team fighting to clear its name of an asterix, one team trying to get one.
