I think he was much more important to us than Hird was during those years
I don’t know why people underate just how awesome he was. He had it all

Lots of memories of bad losses flooding back. Honestly…since about 2005 to last year it’s just been a continuum of mediocrity.
I just expect it now.
I’m very lucky I got to see the late 90s at least
The club and sheedy failed to evolve post 2000.
The end.
It’s probably questionable whether we were truly a ‘great club’ through that 99-2001 period, we definitely had a very good list and the right coach at the time though.
In hindsight, once the more professional bigger, badder, and better coached and run clubs (and footy departments) really arrived on the scene we all but disappeared from the contender conversation and we’ve never recovered.
The saying “Ricky Dyson and a third rounder” reeks of people thinking he is a gun.
/sarcastica
He developed a bad habit of exaggerating contact in the back and falling forward towards the back end of his career, I think that was the source of supporter frustration. If he didn’t take the grab or get the free kick he was out of the contest
Yeah, I don’t think 7 year olds were saying that
Definitely worth still kicking the tyres on the 2006 season. Should be talked about in more threads if I’m honest.
I’d love to go back to being dependent on a key forward.
Essington was born that day.

All threads should be called “This club is ****ed!”.
I think you are way too early .
Reid getting stronger and fitter will eventually not be injury prone
Cox is definitely not soft
I think Perkins will become a very good player, maybe elite.
We will know more in a year or two but I’m very hopeful
Nah. If I’m an employee, I want to be paid what I’m worth…… it’s the company’s job to work out the rest.
IIRC, Jackson was told by the AFL that a percentage of veteran players’ wages would be counted outside the cap, and signed Hird, Lloyd and Mercuri to those big contracts.
The AFL later reneged on that, but it was malpractice on Jackson’s part regardless.
Yeah, I don’t think 7 year olds were saying that
Finally something that we can both agree on.
Reid getting stronger and fitter will eventually not be injury prone
Welp. You’ve done it now.
Remarkable how Jackson screwed the club both with his incredible penny-pinching, and by recklessly throwing money away.
It’s almost 20 years since his tenure ended and we’re still paying for it.
It was a horrible decade, and was only made worse by the decade which preceded it.
The decade that preceded it was fantastic.
The decade that succeeded it was the worst in our history. Thanks to Vlad and Gil using us as the sacrifice to cover up for drug-taking teams that won premierships under their “watch”.

Does he still attend club functions ?
I still think in the minds of many, his career is drastically underrated. The guy was an absolute superstar.
My profile pic gives away my thoughts on him, but I think our supporters do actually recognise how good he was. Oppo fans seem to underrate him a bit, though I suspect that may be due to resentment for how he played for frees in his early days and the way he ended his career, rather than his ability.
