How do you do that?
Channel 7 has the rights to the Brownlow and pay a hefty price for it.
Fox Footy has the MVP award. It’s never been televised free to air and is just as boring as the Brownlow.
The coaches award isn’t even televised.
I don’t think so. Awards are more likely just an ‘added bonus’ / marketing opportunity.
There are pay bonuses for All Australian, B&F, games and goals.
I don’t think they delve into other stats like possessions or hitouts.
Simple, you can still call it the brownlow, you just use the coaches votes instead of the umpires, can still be a round by round thing
The Brownlow is such a fundamentally flawed award in its voting system, I’m not sure why there is such a focus on trying to fix it. It’s always been very limited in its ability to identify the best and fairest player. Umpires already have enough to worry about during games, and the AFL has only given them more rules to pay attention to over the last 5 years.
the coaches know who was most valuable to them during the game, know what jobs players had etc
You’ll still have problems though.
What if a coach skews the voting to get his own players more votes?
What if he skews them against the opposition to give his players an advantage?
It’ll still be a midfielders award because that’s where the game is won and lost.
Especially if it’s the same format (3-2-1). Extend to 5-4-3-2-1 and you’ll just skew it further towards the midfielders.
true, i dont know what the answer is, just the current system is ruining the brownlows prestige
Wining the MVP is the real brownlow you know voted by the players who play the game not the bloody umpires
Yeah nah, I reckon half the players couldn’t give a stuff about mvp voting.
Each of the Brownlow, MVP and coaches’ awards have inherent structural and human nature biases which you’re never going to overcome.
I suspect any tinkering to make the Brownlow fairer will be superficial because there’s just too many variables. If a defender shuts down Jeremy Cameron for the day or a run with mid stops Nick Daicos getting 35 touches no one will see that as worthy of three votes.
As we know the stats are next to worthless and giving the umps access to them will probably only make the ‘most touches wins’ bias even worse.
I bet you Dillon won’t change it though. The blokes the most inflexible, scared of change CEO the afl has ever had. The game will go backwards under his watch, he lacks any charisma and innovation, which you need with a boring chairman like goyder heading things up.
Agreed. I just think it’ll mean no mid will realistically poll unless they get 25+ and no one will fail to poll if they have 35+. It’s moving from one bias to another (or possibly even worse - stacking the two biases on top of one another).
That’s because the AFL was never about the footy or the fairness. It’s about the brand.
The AFL brand is put before anything. Before fairness, before the game, before the people. If anything hurts, embarrasses or loses money for the brand, they will grind you into the ground.
After the brand, is just theatre. Choreographed, guided.
Everything the AFL do is perfect, they are infallible. Umpires the best they’ve ever been guys!
Been a good week for the AFL brand, their golden boy wears another medal and the two northern states are on the big stage this weekend.
Nick Foot, AFL grand final umpire, re the Brownlow farce, ‘Look, the Brownlow voting, it is what it is…’
Yeah, a poor reflection on your cohort, is what it is, champ.
Should just rename it the Brownlow Model. I haven’t watched it for decades, but that seems to be the primary focus.
It’s so vulgar and demeaning and dog eat dog between the women. A friend, partner of a footballer ( not EFC) , refused to go again after two bad experiences.
I notice this year some didn’t take partners and two took their mums.
