Scotty Lucas highlights for mine.

Reimers - shame - could have been our first superstar Kyle. Whatever it was, he just didn’t want it enough.

You know, everyone hates Collingwood getting to the final and being almost certain to win the flag when the West Coke Eagles choke again.

But let us consider their situation versus ours.

After the “blackest day” press conference, Vlad shat himself because he knew that various clubs including Collingwood (who bulked up enormously in their flag winning year), Geelong, and of course Hawthorn were using all sorts of un-approved if not illegal substances and despite that had been written up glowingly in the MSM. Of course the Eagles had won their flag playing under the influences of all sorts but especially ILLEGAL substances that their players have since admitted it made them play like they “felt bulletproof”.

So now here we are. Two clubs who were saved by Vlad are now playing off for the flag. While we are still trying to overcome many years of handicaps and prejudice inflicted on us by the AFL, the maggots acting under their instruction, the communication specialists acting likewise, etc etc.

Someone posted we could have been in the GF if we had an extra midfielder.

People should never forget that we were deprived of the top two rounds of draft picks for TWO seasons. At least one of them could have been good and would be in his prime now.

Also ,we could have still had Paddy “I’m a sell out b@stard who needs to be closer to my wife’s family” Ryder, an AA ruckman. We could have still had “Shut yer Clams” Hibberd, another AA selection.

We could have still had as coach James Hird who had us vying for top spot when Vlad’s shitstorm was rained down on our head.

So, in consideration of the above: Fark Collingwood. Fark West Coke. Fark Vlad. Fark the AFL.

I am looking forward to the day when these arseholes are held to account and we finally get retribution for what has been inflicted on us,

In all honesty we don’t need the most skilled guys playing that put in half arsed efforts we need guys that put in the effort and pressure (Guelfi) week in and week out.

Only then will we see success.

Sadly it seems the teflon is too strong and the will of others who could ask the hard questions too weak, they won’t get their retribution.

All we can hope for is a flag soon to give us the satisfaction that we are back. That we got through it and are back as the best team again. That we cannot be killed off.

Unfortunately, it will not make it up to those who paid a massive price and missed out at that chance for a flag through the saga such as Hird, Watson, Stanton, etc.

Luck is a bigger factor in football success now.

As others mentioned, the week off before the finals has reduced the value of top 4. No longer is the top 4 win in the fist week the energising breath of fresh air a burdened top team uses to blast past the lower finalists. Richmond finished home & away three games clear and did not lose on the MCG until the first game they had to win.

Lower scoring keeps teams in the game even if its opponent is a little better.

Arguably a more chaotic and intense style of play also leads to more injuries, again emphasising reliance on luck. This is perhaps offset by the styles that are reliant on process rather than key players and continuing medical improvements.

So how do we improve our probabilities? Maybe by training to peak late in the year, maybe by concentrating on tactics for close matches, maybe by practising kicking straight which lower scoring emphasises. We are not far off- just like most clubs.

Essendon need to harden the ■■■■ up both on and off the field as a first step to becoming successful again.

I wonder what C’wood fans were saying 12-months ago? Or, even 4-5 rounds into this year…

Fact of the matter is tables can turn very quickly. A team can go from boiled lollies to chocolates to back again (just as the Doggies). Sustained success needs:

  1. Consistency of message (how long has Bucks been coach?)
  2. A battle hardened core group (we will get there)
  3. More than a tiny bit of luck (although, to be fair, any other team with C’wood level of injuries would likely not have made the finals)

If I were our playing group I wouldn’t be looking at any other team for motivation. Just put the tape of them walking off the ground after the Carlton, Melbourne, or Doggies game. That alone should be jarring enough.

Stop living in the past, boomer.

To win a premiership, you need media speculation that the coach is going to get the chop, then a board meeting to decide that the coach stays but the assistants must be changed.

Choco Williams
Bomber Thompson
Damien Hardwick
Nathan Buckley?

You might be on to something there…

Maybe but you assume the players give a stuff. (I’m not saying ours don’t).

One thing about Collingwood is Eddie as president and Bucks are both black and white through and through, believe in the club and would cause any kid who walks through the doors to do so -wide eyed and believing they were at the greatest club in the world, somewhere special.
