Celebrity (and not so) Deaths 2024/25

And now Eric Carmen. RIP.
Ignore his wet, sappy solo hits and focus instead on his career with The Raspberries…

This is the song I think of whenever I hear the term “Power Pop”. RIP Eric.

Damn.

Ship of Fools is such a good song. And sadly, like all have mentioned, as relevant now as when written. I went to see Steely Dan awhile ago and, oddly enough, World Party was the opener. So that was a nice bonus getting to hear him play that tune whilst waiting for the Dan.

Really did not like Eric’s two big eighties hits, but sympathies to those who did.

I’m picking that bloke Koala as a fan.

Join the club… in fact, I’m struggling to think of a solo Eric Carman song I did actually like. All By Myself? Nah, bloody horrible. Hungry Eyes? Ditto…

There are bits of Make Me Lose Control I don’t mind (some nice vocal harmonies), but the sum is considerably less than the merits of some of the individual components.

Hence, my comment about ignoring his solo stuff in the original obit…

As far as today goes, Eric Carman will always be Farrah Fawcett to Karl Wallinger’s Michael Jackson… although EC and KW’s date of deaths are technically a day apart…

I agree, there are parts of Lose Control that I…kind of begrudgingly respect.
The harmony breakdown, and it’s a big, big sound.
But overall, for me it’s just no.

Plus he was an ardent Trump and MAGA supporter, which is difficult to overlook.

Noted Italian car designer Marcello Gandini died today. Among other things he designed the fabulous Lamborghini Muira.

And that alone makes him a legend. One of the most beautiful things ever created. Looks like its doing 100mph standing still.

Not even the most beautiful thing stamped Miura, although it is very nice

I had a tennis buddy, whose husband was a mechanic for high end cars. I was lucky enough to visit his workshop once, just when he had finished restoring a Miura. I got to sit in it and take some photos, my intention being to give him the photos to promote his business. This was in the days before the internet cam along. Sadly he didn’t fire up the V12. Gandini also designed the Lambo Countach, successor to the Miura.

I hope a group of drunken bogan chicks shriek a horrible rendition of “Amazing Grace” at his funeral.

Eerie precursor seems more than a bit of a stretch

That bit is ridiculous.

RIP Steve.

I’ve mentioned on here before that his 1973 debut album The Human Menagerie is one of my all-time favourite records. Sheesh, that’s over 50 years ago!
