Celebrity (and not so) Deaths 2024/25

I always liked this from Albini:

The song “In the Meantime” was recorded by Steve Albini and later remixed by Andy Wallace. Wallace would make additional changes to the album; the contrast between his style of mixing, which involves (among other things) triggered samples and a cleaner, more polished sound (leading to the album’s distinctive half-wood, half-metal snare drum sound), irritated Albini. Later, when in negotiations to record Nirvana’s In Utero , he stipulated a clause be added to his contract stating that Wallace would not be allowed to remix the album, after he had mixed Nevermind , which was released nine months before Meantime .

Have you ever heard the Butch Vig (i.e. pre-Andy Wallace) mixes of Nevermind? It came in the 25th anniversary (or was it 20th… I forget…) 4CD release. They’re on YouTube as the “Devonshire Mixes”…

It doesn’t sound too different in its own right, but if you do a A-B comparison, it does. Mainly the EQ’ing, the drums… some of Wallace’s mix is sampled drums triggered by Grohl’s drums.

No, I’ll have to check it out, thanks.

You can still pick up his December 1993 article in the no.5 issue of the Baffler, on its site of older issues

That’s so funny, I just read it earlier. It was re-printed in 1994 in Maximum Rock’n’Roll fanzine that I read religiously at the time. The issue infamously had a picture on the cover of a man with a gun in his mouth and they copped loads of flak because of Cobain’s recent death. I lent my copy out at some point and never saw it again, it was kind of a legendary issue with that Albini piece the highlight.

We frequently went there from 1977 when it opened in Brunswick, saw some great local and overseas bands. Loud place with lots of fights, the owner called it working class Billboard ! Reckons it is a reason for hearing problems in anyone who went there.

Just cam in to post that. Far out.

WAY too young.
That is a sad story indeed. You would have hoped that with all the financial power the AFL has, someone could have assisted a clearly conflicted individual.

Even with resources sometimes a life cannot be saved. We don’t know what level of support he was given but I have known people who have had full support but still took their lives.

Check out his stuff, especially Big Black and Shellac.

Shattered by this news. Glad I got to see Shellac a number of times. One of my all time favorite bands. At Action Park blew me away from the first note. Half way through my Black Ass I took it from the CD player at Au go go and bought it on the spot.

Rip.

Yeah, sad.
The bloke absolutely loved the NBL and wanted to see Australia on the map big time as a powerhouse. Did a ton of work promoting the league and was fantastic for the game.

I like that tune

Yeah, it’s an ok tune. Production is very much “of its time” though…

Yeah I was shocked to learn of this one, had no idea he had cancer. He definitely did all he could to promote the NBL, which is great from a guy from the USA to be so passionate about our competition.

He used to have a regular guest spot in SEN with Andrew Gaze, it was quite good. Gaze really respected him.
