Celebrity (and not so) Deaths 2024/25

Roy Thomas Baker… RIP…

Everything but the kitchen sink productions… as shown most notably in his Bohemian Rhapsody work at the very least…

Stacky’s house is around the corner from mine, alwayss polite and would have a chat.

Kids would go “who is that man” and I would say “an Aussie cricket legend”

There’s a huge difference though. In all other professions bar hollywood/media, pedo’s get deservedly hung out to dry when discovered.

They don’t have a giant apparatus who protect, support, obfuscate, cover up, enable and propagandise for them.

I remember an interview with a couple members of the Cars talking about their first album… talking about Roy Thomas Baker’s production.

He kept going on and on about “big background vocals… HUGE background vocals”. Of course, this was only a short time after he’d done A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races.

Gotta say, while he worked on quite a few albums I do like, I don’t like his work on Cheap Trick’s One on One much at all. It may have spawned a hit in If You Want My Love (comfortably the best song on the album), but on the whole the album is very ordinary - all hairmetal-sounding guitars, big 80’s reverbed drums and Robin Zander (a man with a great singing range) adopting a Jimmy Barnes-style scream for some inexplicable reason. Didn’t help that the songs themselves were pretty uninspired…

I caught the re-runs of Hunter and Division 4 as a kid-and loved them- but he really came into view for me in the plethora of series/mini-series that TV spawned. Tandarra/Cash and Company, Against the Wind, Skyways.

The stranglehold the organisation has on its victims is horrendous.

Someone close to me stumped up the courage to tell their parents that the parish priest had touched them up after mass. For this admission they were soundly beaten and told that blasphemers burn in hell.

One for the NFL fans - Steve McMichael finally succumbed to his ALS.

Best know for being one of the anchors of the infamous '85 Bears defense.

Absolutely terrorised my Packers for years.

I knew he was in pretty bad shape; they kept cutting to him during his Hall of Fame ceremony last year and he was basically wheelchair bound and unable to speak.

I hated the Bears but gee they were good and he was a big reason why.

Also several years in pro wrestling.

Another record producer, and this one with a very Australian pedigree.

If you have read anything I’ve posted in music threads, you’ll know how I feel about Men at Work and what those albums mean to me.

And they hold up well… very well. Some early 80s records have aged very poorly, but not theirs.

One late night in the mid 80s after a boozy night out in Sydney, I hailed a cab and in I got. After about a minute I looked up again at the cab driver, his close cropped hair and in the rear view immediately recognised Gerard Kennedy. “Hang on, aren’t you Frank Banner?” I slurred.

“Umm yep," came the answer in that instantly recognisable raspy deep voice. “Actually Gerard is the name,”. I then proceeded to bore him with how great an actor he was etc. Had a great chat. Predictably I eventually asked … “why on earth are you driving a cab out and about on a Friday night in Sydney?” “Helps pay the bills” came the reply. He looked ahead … looked back at me in the rear view, shrugged his shoulders and then smiled.

He of course did so much other work. D4 still one of my favourite ever cop shows back then. The music was great … not a better theme tune around I reckon.

93 … he had a good innings.
RIP Gerard Kennedy.
