Celebrity (and not so) Deaths 2024 onwards

You know what? I reckon you’re right. I seem to remember Garrett rolling his eyes, making out that he was going to re-spin, and saying something along the lines of “Jesus Christ!” and that he would be doing it reluctantly

I don’t know if there was more than one show, but I was definitely at one on the Saturday night.

I remember it very well as it was the same day as my work Christmas party (cruise on the Yarra and out into the bay), followed by the concert…and then some quality time with a brand new girlfriend. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

My first real rock gig at 14 years old, they blew my mind. Matt Finish support was good too.

I was also at the Kooyong one where the crowd on the deck ripped up the sea grass matting protecting the court and used the squares as frisbees.

Yeah “One For The Homeless Kids” was the title I had in my memory. Hoodoo Gurus were supposed to support but cancelled, so it was just Brainspeak. My first ever concert.

Really? It’s legit one of their best songs.

Sadly, it hsa become much more relevant these days.

Yeah, US Forces was dropped from their setlist for a long time. I could be wrong, but I suspect the subject matter was thorny for him politically. Maybe they’d just started to regard it as a millstone (happens to a lot of artists with their biggest songs). A bit suss though why that song in particular disappeared, and yet Power & The Passion - equally as big a hit - remained…

‘Quality time’ hey?

Where did Paul Hester rank amongst Aussie drummers?

Never an oils fan but from the comments here and in the media we have lost a talented and popular musso

Same here.

I reckon that would depend entirely on the musical taste of the person you asked.

I remember him being solid and competent, but I don’t ever remember any of their songs exactly driving the rhythm in to the listener.

Sister Madly is really the only one that stands out to me.
I’d kind of expect to notice him more on bigger songs like When You Come and Locked Out, but that could be a production choice, it could be that he’s just…being the right fit for the song.

Hirst did quite a bit of stuff besides Midnight Oil, across a range of clearly different styles.

And Steve Prestwich, I know nothing about drumming but was always told he was very good.

Also RIP Rob, not a huge oils fan but I know what he meant to Aussie music.

According to wiki Neil took on Hester on the recommendation of Hirst!

That was friggin’ awesome.
I do kind of wish they took a bit more care to match the video with the sound, but still…wow.
Thank you.

They were such a drum-driven band.
I know it probably sounds stupid, but Hirst kinda meant more to me than Garrett.

Both of Mrs Fox’s parents died of pancreatic cancer. I was around when her Mum died and it is a horrible thing to have and for family to watch. Detection happens usually too late to save most and few survive the treatments.

We investigated any links of it being passed down but more likely environment cause. Her Dad was a house painter in the time of lead based paint and some research suggests a link and her Mum washed the clothes. There are examples of clusters with pancreatic cancers in some Towns or suburbs.

And @Albert_Thurgood , medical research in our National is farked due to lack of funding and a brain drain with some of brightest moving to better funded places. Supposed plan was a $billion research fund spend each year and only $650 million was awarded out of existing fund. Early detection of pancreatic cancers would go a long way to saving lives. Have you done any work in this area.

The NHS are trialing a new breath test for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. There is real hope in this area of research.

The wife of the late (and great) Alan Rickman is championing more funds via signed and rare Potter book auctions as well to help accelerate.

Do you remember the first time you ever saw the Oils ?

I was reflecting that last night and for me it was at a great venue in Newcastle around 1980 or so. It was called the Ambassador Club I think, and I still remember the drummer who dominated the music, and there was this tall bald bloke who could really belt out a song. Saw them many times after that and the Sydney Olympics stands out as well.

Great drummer, seemed ageless. Think I will play Oils all day today.
